Review
". . . highly engaging and entertaining, with dry wit infusing this book . . . Amusing, insightful snapshots of Ivy League variegations." - Kirkus
"Beyond the witty experiences, Green takes readers through the real ups and downs of the Ivy League, leaving them with a sense of the heartfelt relationships and meaningful experiences of college life. Anyone looking to attend college, whether or not he or she is applying to the Ivy League schools, should read this book closely to get a more realistic picture of university life: the parties, the relationships, the laughs, the tears, and the nights you find yourself without a way to get home at three o'clock in the morning." - Chanticleer Book Reviews
From the Author
First and foremost: Thank you! Amazon is a big place, and I appreciate you taking the time to look at The Things I Learned in College.
The book tells the true, funny story of an academic year that I spent exploring the eight Ivy League schools. I arrived at Cornell with the freshmen in August, and I finished with the seniors at Princeton in May. In between, I visited Brown, Dartmouth, Yale, Penn, Columbia, Penn again (long story), and Harvard. I met hundreds of students, attended dozens of classes, and experienced life at some of the most selective institutions in the world.
This book is not a guidebook or an academic tome. It is intended to be informational - perhaps even educational - but its primary goal is entertainment. I sincerely hope you enjoy it.
About the Author
Sean-Michael Green was a terrible high school student, barely graduating with poor grades. He found college years later, and discovered an aptitude and intellectual curiosity that surprised him. He earned degrees at the University of Pittsburgh, Marist College, the University of Pennsylvania, and Cornell University; and he studied at Columbia, Carnegie Mellon, and the Sorbonne. Today, he works as an administrator at a university.
Prior to pursuing his dream of working in higher education, Sean-Michael served as a United States Marine, an attorney, an entrepreneur, a hotel clerk (for about three hours), an Emergency Medical Technician, and a stand-up comedian.
He lives in the northeast of the United States, surrounded by Ivy League schools.

A fascinating look behind the Ivy League curtain
By Monica Mandeville
When I began reading this book, I was curious to learn more about the distinguished Ivies I had admired since my youth. I wondered how Green would be able to really crack the truth of the awe and mystery behind them. The truth is, he only scratched the surface. Because Green's reality as he explains it is that it is but one subjective take on eight institutions which each have hundreds of years of history behind them. And he did it in just 30 days at each of the ivies. That being said, I'm not sure anyone really could capture the essence of the ivy league experience better than Green has done.
Green's story is a personal one, filled with humorous anecdotes of Greek life parties, thought-provoking lectures, and a number of interesting and colorful characters who he met along the way. And in reading this book, I could not help but recount my own college experience and how much I missed the adventure of being young, bright-eyed, and with my entire future in front of me. Even more so as I was a junior at university when Green toured the grounds of the institutions he writes about. As in Green's case, the mysterious curtain of Harvard and Yale have been lifted for me, even if for a moment. The Ivy League phenomenon is still a special one, for all the lore of secret societies and histories of the campuses have to offer. But I finally realize after reading Green's book that every college student's experience is incredibly unique and made up of moments and memories with classmates and in lecture halls, as well as the extra curricular activities that each partakes in, no matter where it might be, ivy league or no. Thanks to Green, I am filled with nostalgia of crisp fall trees and the smell of of books inside the stacks of the university library I attended, the bustle of the dining halls and the passion of protesters at an anti-war rally.
Green's recollections of his time in college is perfect for prospective students who are thinking of attending one of the eight institutions he tours. But I think the book is even better for anyone who wants to recall fondly of their days at university. To take from one of the Yale college mottos Green mentions in the book, "Someday, perhaps, it will be pleasant to remember these things." Thanks to Green's book, I have found an incredible truth in that statement, recalling all the things I learned in college and how it made me the person I am today.

A Modern Day Philomath!
By Anthony A. Spadaro
BLUF (Bottom Line Up Front): I was provided a gratis copy by the Author in return for a honest and forthright review.
An epic/nomadic journey by a self professed "college freak" spending a year of his life dissecting the "Ivy League" Institutions of Higher Learning. BUY THIS BOOK and be prepared to be enthralled, entertained and educated on the culture (and not necessarily the academic side), of Ivy League life.
Sean-Michael Green is a modern day Philomath (look it up). Do not expect polemics or acculturation. The author fully understands his subject matter (he is an insider by virtue of his attendance at two of Institutions) and provides forthright assessments. Rather, Sean-Michael Green is an academic anthropologist. He is not formulaic in his writing style. He provides detailed insight through investigative rigor about each of the Ivy League schools, (and allows the reader to draw their own conclusions).
I truly hope this is not a Sean-Michael Green's valediction to the writing world and hope we will see other exposés from him about other Institutions of Higher Education. Please Sean-Michael, other guidebooks that take a look at say, "those that claim they are regional Ivies?" The list is endless and I would like to envision a trail blazed path for Sean-Michael Green that allows him to be the definitive anthropological source on Institutions of Higher Education.
