The first book to examine the unprecedented growth of China's economic investment in the developing world, its impact at the local level, and a rare hands-on picture of the role of ordinary Chinese in the juggernaut that is China, Inc.
Beijing-based journalists Juan Pablo Cardenal and Heriberto Araújo crisscrossed the globe from 2009-2011 to investigate how the Chinese are literally making the developing world in their own image. What they discovered is a human story, an economic story, and a political story, one that is changing the course of history and that has never been explored, or reported, in depth and on the ground. The “silent army” to which the authors refer is made up of the many ordinary Chinese citizens working around the world - in the oil industry in Kazakhstan, mining minerals in the Democratic Republic of Congo, building dams in Ecuador, selling hijabs in Cairo - who are contributing to China's global dominance while also leaving their mark in less salutary ways. With original and fresh reporting as well as top-notch writing, China's Silent Army takes full advantage of the Spanish-speaking authors' outsider experience to reveal China's influence abroad in all its most vital implications - for foreign policy, trade, private business, and the environment.

Be glad you are not a poor Chinese person working outside ...
By T. Hemmer
Want to know what is going on in this world concerning the Chinese?
This book will open your eyes.
The biggest surprise is that none communist Chinese, around the world, are supporting communist China.
Because, right or wrong it is their homeland, even if they have not lived there for many years.
There are a few more things that you will find of interest in this book.
Be glad you are not a poor Chinese person working outside China, for a Chinese company.

Interesting Details, but No New Great Insights -
By Loyd Eskildson
The authors' hypothesis is that China's expansion is inexorable, driven by the depression in the West, and entering its second phase - gradual entry into Western markets. They also contend that China's expansion is supported by millions of anonymous Chinese citizens working in unlikely places around the world, and massive funds from the China Export-Import Bank and the China Development Bank. Many projects don't even go through public bidding - often backed with oil and made under confidential conditions. In 2009-10 Beijing overtook the World Bank as the biggest lender on the planet, granting over $110 billion in credit. It is building or financing 300 dams across the world, thousands of miles of oil and gas pipelines in places like Sudan, Kazakhstan and Burma, railway projects in Argentina and Venezuela. In Africa it has contributed to the construction of 1,200 miles of railroad tracks, 1,800 miles of roads, and 160 schools and hospitals.
Private Chinese enterprises and state-run companies operating overseas regularly import their entire Chinese workforce from just one area. The rationale - they are more easily controlled because their colleagues and friends are also watching and no Chinese person wants his family to lose face at home. Workers usually come back with a significant amount to capital to invest in the education of their children or business opportunities. It's estimated that there are 5,000 - 100,000 Chinese making a living selling door-to-door in Egypt.
The Dragon Mart in Dubai covers 150,000 square meters, houses 4,000 Chinese shops, and is the biggest market for Chinese goods outside China.
An estimated 40% of the $15 billion in trade between Iran and the UAE is actually trade with China. China overtook Russia in 2007 as Iran's primary arms supplier. Hong Kong is able to import American dual-use technology thanks to bilateral agreements signed during the British colonial era, then send those items into Iran.
A Chinese businessman owns the biggest market in Vladivostok; covering 4,000 square meters it houses 1,000 shops with 2,000 employees. Over 805 of the products on sale come from China. In the whole of Russia, 61% of foreign market workers are Chinese. People of Chinese ethnicity comprise the largest group in countries such a Singapore (77%), and a large part of Malaysia (26%), Thailand (11%), and Brunei (29%). As part of its 'go out' and 'bring back in' policies, Beijing has sent thousands of representatives across the world to attract capital from investors of Chinese origin. Chinese savers at home, however, are subject to strict capital controls that restrict their ability to send money out of the country.
The Chinese immigrant community in Argentina (about 75,000) began arriving in the 1990s, and has created an empire of 8,900 supermarkets employing over 19,000 that uses centralized purchasing to underprice competitors. The group (Casrech) is undertaking similar moves in Bolivia, Chile, and Ecuador.
There are an estimated 1 - 2 million Chinese migrants in northern Burma, targeting mostly mining (jade). The Chinese won all the acutions because they could pay larger brives than the locals. All processing takes place in China. Drugs and AIDS are rampant amont the locals. In Peru, 8 Chinese companies control 295 mining concessions. State-owned Chinese companies brought in $6 billion in return for an estimated $40 - $120 billion in Democratic Republic of Congo copper and cobalt. Another *.1 billion in loans for access to Turkmenistan gas - the aim is to supply about half of China's consumption for the next five years via drilling and a new pipeline. A $2 billion dam in Ecuador is financed by China, and being built by a Chinese company with Chinese workers. Costa Rica received a National Stadium (35,000 seating) for $89 million after supporting China vs. Taiwan in the U.N. Argentina is the recipient of a $1.4 billion project to develop 320,000 hectares of currently unarable land via bringing water and energy to the site; the total funds includes $500 million to develop infrastructure and a seaport with which to ship harvests to China. China has similarly leased land in Brazil, the Philippines, and Madagascar.
Chinese emigrants do not integrate well - some believe this is because China is a civilization-state rather than a nation-state. The sense of belonging to a culture that dates back over 5,000 years does not disappear when living in a different society. This also has led to a strong sense of nationalism.

By Jake Ng
Having chance to read this crystal clear investigation about the China flow has been flocking other territories in their introvert way, I totally appreciated with the two Spanish true journalist who spent much time and real struggle to bring this book in to life. The translation is phenomenal and easy to catch up with the details and some small sections inside.
I have just read to Chapter 4 but will finish the book very soon because it delivers many great information and reasons why China and itself Chinese mainland has been becoming wealthy at that time. They are like python swallows every single treasure of some far away country that somehow we forget its exist. And they are hard working as well. Please read it and you will be surprised.
Actually, I feel lucky when grasping this book in Bangkok. We cannot find that in Viet Nam.
