Excellent book to practice French reading

Excellent book for my 5-year old daughter to practice reading in French since there are typically only one to three short lines on each page. While my daughter grew up with both French and English at home, this would be a good book for someone learning French as well (very basic vocabulary and sentences).

Great minds,...think in Violet

I remember my mother reading this to me, (Harold and the Purple Crayon, is the name of the English version). I read it to my oldest two (now in their 20's), I bought it for my youngest two, they love it also,...so I was overjoyed to find it in French for my non-English speaking niece from Canada. Yay! This book seems so simple when you first open it,...but watch how your child's imagine runs with it as you (or they) read it. It's kind of a must have for your child's at-home-library, if you ask me.

This is an excellent collection of articles describing people, firms, and nations that succeeded in modern capitlism. Looking a the four most successful economies of the past two centuries: England, US, Germany, and Japan- Prof. McCraw's expertly edited and coherent collection of articles gives the reader a flavor of what made for great success in the capitalist economy. Each country has three articles: a firm, an entrepenure, and the country itself for a total of 12 articles each written by true experts. McCraw's understanding of capitlism is somewhat skewed toward the modern, however on the whole the book is extremely balanced. Of partiuclar note, is Prof. David Moss's article on the Deutch Bank which dicusses the succcess, failures, rewards, and dark side of capitalism.

Another charming love story by Ms. Brooks. Our heroine and her brother are hired to cater the hero's sister's wedding. It's a last minute booking and one that could make or break their struggling catering company. From the beginning Reece's cold attitude towards love and marriage have Miriam disconcerted. They have an undeniable attraction but Miriam refuses to be just another "stringless" woman in Reece's life. I love how their relationship evolves and Reece slowly reveals hints of the man beneath all the icy cold expressions. When Miriam strikes back during a confrontation and tells him some home truths, you can't help but feel Reece's pain. Wonderful book to while away a rainy morning!

Miriam and her Mitch Bennett took over the running of a catering service their father started. Although for the past 5 yrs they have had to work tooth and nail to get the business into the black they both love what they are doing.
Reece Vance needs them to cater his twin sister Barbara's wedding.
This would be the largest job Mim and Mitch had done yet, and their dear friend and mentor Frank Craven recommended them for the job.
Miriam is put on her mettle, in more than one way.
Ice cold Reece is attracted to her, much against his own will, but attracted never the less.
Reece comes upon Mim being accosted by a couple of thugs after he had dropped her off at her office. She had left her briefcase in his car, when he put the mugs in their place, he took over the payment of their business vans they had bought from Gregory Turner. Mr Turner is two shakes from a prison sentence. The goons threaten to have their way with Mim when Reece came to Mim's rescue.
I saw right away that Reece had lost his heart to Mim, and that she was suffering from the same condition. It was just a matter of time.
But then I learn Reece and his sister had a unnatural mother, she was beautiful, but only on the outside, their father had loved her so much that anything she wanted he would turn flips to get to for her. Even when she wanted to send Reece and Barbara to boarding school at the age of 8, my heart goes out to the lonely little lost boy he still has his soul.
Mim ends up not only fighting her own feelings for Reece, but his back ground, as well as for Barbara's happiness.

This powerful book will never be out of date

The Death and Resurrection Show's power is that it is timeless. It astonishes, and will continue to astonish, as long as there are people.
It traces us back to the beginning of man, when the most powerful thing you could do was to claim to have been to the other side. Having returned from the Underworld and from the Upperworld, shamans held sway over their merely mortal fellow tribesmen.

When institutional religions formed, they co-opted the stories. Hell in Christianity suddenly became a bad place, while until the death of Jesus (who also visited the Underworld), it was a place to escape TO, not from.

Christianity slammed the competition of minstrels, fairs, puppets and performers, because it wanted everyone's sole attention. Its magic had to be the only magic, or it felt doomed, much as Islam clearly feels today.

In the last century, with mass communication, entertainment took over and rockstars ruled. It is Taylor's analysis that rockstars employed precisely the same words, deeds and acts as the shamans did, that really gives the book its impact. The words of Jerry Lee Lewis, of Bob Dylan, of John Lennon, all match the fascinating research Taylor has taken us through from prehistoric times. And coming full circle, he posits that it is precisely their success and dominance in the secular 60s that led to the resurgence of institutional religion since then.

With the deaths of Jimi Hendrix and John Lennon and James Brown, the yawning gap of religious satisfaction has caused millions to seek solace in the institutions once again. It is precisely the flower children of the 60s who have led the stampede of the Born Agains. We have no shamans comparable to these stars any more. Certainly hip hop and rap have provided none. Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake inspire nothing. So we have come full circle. We have never left the tribal stage of needing spiritual reassurance that there is more to life than this Middleworld we see.

This is an extraordinarily important book. I first owned it when it was new in 1985. I had a review copy, which for the only time in my life, someone stole from my collection about five years later. I just recently found another, and paid handsomely for it. It is worth every penny. Its importance to me is its revelation of who we really are, and who we will look to for solace and salvation. It is a real eye opener.

On the Sacred Roots of Theatre

This is one of the best (and only) thorough studies of the sacred roots of theatre and how our ancestral memory of these roots affects our attitudes about celebrity entertainers. It is well researched and makes good reading. A friend loaned me a copy of the paperback when I was studying at Lecoq and if I could find another I would gladly buy it. However, the $999 price tag is criminal, and I can only think it is intended to dissuade average people from accessing this incredibly important information about our collective, ancestral pasts. A MUST HAVE, if you see it at a reasonable price.

WOW!!

What a jewel of a book! Vastly illuminating about why we are so transfixed by entertainers. Why we expect to "feel good" after a performance. Why we imbue entertainers with almost magical abilities. Fascinating theory tracing entertainers back to ancient shamens and healers. I'm thrilled I found this book and had the opportuninty to read it. It has given me things to think about for lifetime. I wish this author would write more on related subjects.

Good and bad

The story is charming and a light, easy read. Good for relaxing, so I'll likely read the sequels. But the editing is annoying, with poor punctuation (ridiculous use of apostrophes), mediocre grammar, and some lousy spelling thrown in. Chip and Dales? Really? Sounds more like chipmunks than guys who do strip dancing. I'm just saying.....

Long winded

The storyline is just.... well its dumb. Chase gives Lauren 100 grand and marries her after her fathers death so she can pay off his debt. No one knows that they married or where the money came from. Seven years later he moves back. Lauren is a control freak and Chase is a pushy idiot. I guess even the author didnt feel that there was enough to hold the reader so some suspense is thrown in with someone trying to kill Lauren. Which was just stupid.

But more than anything I felt the story was drug out. I found myself skipping whole pages because it was filled with crap.

I gave the book two stars because there are some good parts in the book. However they do not outweigh the bad.

I enjoy the bit of a twist to the story line that J. Sanders gives. The part I do not like as much are the explicit love scenes. I prefer intimate scenes written with more finesse.

Cultural depth through a long, long history

This is a beautifully illustrated account of the first 60,000 years of history for the First Australians. To put that into perspective, the period since the British settlers arrived could be represented by just one page of this large book. There is a very long and fascinating history prior to 1788, dating back to the first arrivals, their journey perhaps precipitated by the devastating eruption of Mt Toba in Sumatra. And the author describes the journey through the archipelago of Indonesia to the Australian continent (which was then considerably larger than its current size), utilising sea currents and prevailing winds to cover the comparatively short distances between islands.

Confronting new mega-fauna faced the first arrivals as they came, over many generations, to inhabit the whole continent. Fascinating stories are told through the world's oldest art galleries and the detritus of campsites and shelters occupied over thousands of years. The first Tasmanians have their own incredible story, first occupying the peninsula when it was home to massive glaciers, until they were subsequently isolated for thousands of years after flooding of the Bassian plain.

There were two little known subsequent migrations to the continent, one around 11,000 years ago brought in a rare genetic disorder and another around 5,000 years ago brought in a companion animal which eventually became the dingo. The story is told of the impact of climate on our first people - as coasts, deserts and glacial terrain shifted through ice ages and global warming, the people adapted and lived on.

This is a great history (also very readable) which all Australians should appreciate and acknowledge.

This is a very interesting readable book. It covers all parts of Australia, what and where they did things, what animals that were there at the times, and even the climate.
