Good For What It's About

As a long time listener to the Lionel radio show, I was anxious to read this book. (Everyone's Crazy Except You and Me and I'm Not so Sure About You)

Lionel had been a highly skilled lawyer before becoming a talk show host, so I thought his book would be about some of his court cases. He occasionally relates them over the air, and his descriptive, true experiences as an attorney are either hilarious or about thought provoking legal paradoxes, both of which are enjoyable or fascinating to hear.

His book is well written and his knowledge of Latin along with remotely used English language phraseology is a learning experience in itself. However, every chapter is a rant about various subjects that get him riled up. He seems furious with everything he dislikes, whether big or small--from Neo-Cons; down to people with grotesque feet wearing flip-flops. There's a good laugh in every chapter, especially if one enjoys jokes poking fun at hypocracy.

This book is more likely to appeal to males than to females due to the use of rather ribald language which, as a woman, I don't particularly appreciate. In fact, I would have given it a higher score had he cleaned it up a bit.

If you're a guy and that's the way you talk when your having a beer with your buds, you'll get a big kick out reading this book--oh, and you'd best be of the Liberal persuasion.

Lionel IS crazy!

I've been a Lionel fan for many, many years!
This book is a great read, makes a perfect gift for grad or dad.
Should be required reading... well, perhaps not, but, it's a fun book!
Be warned, Lionel is a self-described etymologist, a philologist, and a logophile; you might want to have a dictionary close by as you read the book.

I had never heard of Lionel or his talk show. My husband purchased this book on kindle. It is a very witty book. His topics are clever. I don't know if "conservatives" will like it, but this fake liberal did.

Absurd

This book is enormous. It's so big that the picture they used for the cover is distorted and looks horrible. The words in it are printed huge! This book could easily be half it's size and be much better. When I'm reading it I feel like I'm reading some sort of computer manual. Also from what I've read so far it seems that a lot of stuff is repeated to take up more space. I'm very unhappy that I wasted so much money one this book.

Grade 7 Up—The opening chapters cover the influence of ancient Greece and Rome on the English alphabet and language. Later, German dialects of invading Angle and Saxon tribes mixed with Celtic and Latin, and Old English emerged. William of Normandy's rise to power in 1066 brought an influx of French words. Warfare between the Arabs and Europeans in the 1100s and 1200s led to further exchange of language and ideas. Simultaneously, Old English evolved into Middle English. In the 1500s, the Protestant movement, coupled with printing-press technology, led to the dissemination of English-language Bibles. English in the New World was influenced by when and where settlers came from, as the language evolved yet again. Source notes and a selected bibliography provide plenty of more-detailed sources to explore. The black-and-white illustrations include maps, portraits, and pencil drawings cued to the text. Exercises throughout the book could easily be adapted for classroom activities, e.g., matching definitions to words borrowed from Italian. The author achieves a blithe, conversational tone but sneaks in the occasional warning about how carelessness and sloppy mistakes can damage the language. Great lesson on the English language history.

Really enjoyed the history of the language I speak, and why Americans diverged from the way Brits spell (and pronounce) our common language. Well worth the read for adults even though the intended audience would be middle school/early high school students. The author does do some grammar lessons towards the end of the book which comes across as pedantic, but perhaps necessary for the intended audience. It is a book that can be enjoyed by young and old alike.

The licks in this book are awesome. This is what I want in a lick book. Definitely one of the better lick books I've come across. Not for the beginner.

Excellent and complete

I do recommend this book : definitely helpful for any intermediate-advanced guitar player who wants to study this style or develop more skills in this idiom.
Beginners are not really concerned (there is no indication about right-hand picking and left-hand fingerings).
The licks included in this book are very useful (I particularly appreciated the chapters dedicated to open-string and double-stop licks) , and it was the main purpose (very few theoretical considerations).

Licks seem "inauthentic"

I agree with the reviewer who described many of the licks as "blah." Having purchased videos/books by Johnny Hiland, Doug Seven, Danny Gatton, and Red Volkaert, as well as this one, I noticed that the majority of the licks in this book do not seem "authentic," comparatively speaking. While constructed from the proper scales and utilizing common chicken pickin techniques such as open strings and bends, they lack the sound and feel that are idiomatic of the genre; some are rather sterile sounding. There are even some offerings of wide intervallic licks and string skipping licks, which to me sounds more at home with jazz fusion or metal. The bending licks do not have the "pedal steel" feel to them. Most importantly, there are no indications on which notes of the licks should either be plucked or picked - this is crucial, since this technique is what gives this style its very name....
