This is a book that has been needed by those of us in the restoration end of the VW hobby for a long time. Original issues bring big bucks, and there aren't many of them left. I guard my copy with my life. Just about every question that can come up during the restoration of an Oval Window is answered . . . Not only does this book show the original engine, tranny, and brake stuff, but it also shows how to replace a window winder mechanism or adjust a door. I love her idea that "...underneath all the nothings we talk about - there is something much deeper needing to be said." It's so very true. We automatically answer fine or pretty good, or we expect others to answer the same. But what are we really thing? Feeling? 

With chapters titled Wrinkly Crinkly, Ugly Shoes, I'm A Shorty, and Me? A Whimp?, just to name a few, I found myself in her words over and over again. It was as though author Seedorf had written this book (her column) based on my life. I'm sure you'll find yourself on these wonderful pages too.

Better Late Than Never

I won this book shortly after following Julie on her Facebook page. She asked if I could give her a review when I was done. That was many months ago, so I hope she didn't give up on me.
Part of the reason this took so long was because of how much I enjoyed it. "How could that be?" You may ask, "Why wouldn't you read it right up if you liked it?" Well, it was because I didn't want it to end. It was just so great.
This is a collection of Julie's articles she put together in one book. I didn't realize this at first. All I knew was the title, and I thought the cover looked pretty great. After reading the first few segments, I thought, "Gee, this sounds like it should be a blog, not a book."
Then I realized it basically was just that. I'd put it down and pick it up to treat myself to a few yummy tidbits of Julie's life. You see, she writes about herself; her thoughts, her experiences, her feelings. I felt like I was getting to know her slowly as the book unwound.
I loved her honesty and thought process. She is forthright in her writing, and admits she's not always perfect, including her writing. She accepts many things about others, and hopes that they do the same for her. She treats people with the respect and kindness she would like to be treated with. If she's anything like her articles, we could definitely be friends.
Many times I thought of my parents when I read her articles. I figured she must be around their generation. Yet I also related to her. She talked about things about her youth and past, but didn't make me, the reader feel lost being from a different time. She brought me right in with her. My dad has a knack for that as well, so I appreciated her story telling very much.
Overall I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read tidbits. They are funny, fun, whimsical, kind, thoughtful and provoking at times. Well worth the read.

SOMETHING ABOUT NOTHING is a delightful and thought provoking book based on author Julie Seedorf’s column by the same name.

I love her idea that “…underneath all the nothings we talk about – there is something much deeper needing to be said.” It’s so very true. We automatically answer fine or pretty good, or we expect others to answer the same. But what are we really thing? Feeling?

With chapters titled Wrinkly Crinkly, Ugly Shoes, I’m A Shorty, and Me? A Whimp?, just to name a few, I found myself lost in her words over and over again. It was as though author Seedorf had written this book (her column) based on my life. I’m sure you’ll find yourself on these wonderful pages too.

What an enjoyable collection of 'nothings!' Many of us have experienced the same joys and disappointments in our lives but most of us never write them down. Julie Seedorf has a wonderful collection of everyday events that add up to many hours of laughter and memories. Her memories become ours. Thank you for putting all these together for us to read!

The Greeks and Romans in the ancient world, and the Irish, Anglo-Saxons, continental Germans and Scandinavians in the medieval world, all understood the power of the tree, and its derivative the pillar, as markers of the centre. Sacred trees and pillars dotted their landscapes, and the territory around them derived its meaning from their presence. Unfamiliar or even hostile lands could be tamed and made meaningful by the erection of a monument that replicated the sacred centre. Such monuments also linked with boundaries, and by extension with law and order, custom and tradition. The sacred tree and pillar as centre symbolized the stability of the cosmos and of society. When the Pagan peoples of Europe adopted Christianity, the sacred trees and pillars, visible signs of the presence of the gods in the landscape, were popular targets for axe-wielding saints and missionaries who desired to force the conversion of the landscape as well as the people. Yet Christianity had its own tree monument, the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified, and which came to signify resurrected life and the conquest of eternal death for the devout. As European Pagans were converted to Christianity, their tree and pillar monuments were changed into Christian forms; the great standing crosses of Anglo-Saxon northern England played many of the same roles as Pagan sacred trees and pillars. Irish and Anglo-Saxons Christians often combined the image of the Tree of Life from the Garden of Eden with Christ on the cross, to produce a Christian version of the tree as imago mundi.

About the Author
Carole M. Cusack is Associate Professor in Studies in Religion at the University of Sydney, Australia. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Studies in Religion and English Literature, a Master of Education (Educational Psychology), and a PhD, all from the University of Sydney. Her publications include Conversion Among the Germanic Peoples (Cassell, 1998), The Essence of Buddhism (Lansdowne, 2001), and Invented Religions: Imagination, Fiction and Faith (Ashgate, 2010), as well as a number of edited volumes and academic articles. With Dr Christopher Hartney (University of Sydney) she is editor of the Journal of Religious History, and with Professor Liselotte Frisk (Dalarna University, Sweden) she is editor of the International Journal for the Study of New Religions.
