Over the past fifteen years, the optimal enforcement of EU competition law has become a major concern. This book contains a unique collection of articles by lawyers and economists on current issues in the public and private enforcement of competition law. Public enforcement has been strengthened in numerous ways – for example, through the introduction of a leniency programme and a substantial increase in fines for competition law violations. At the same time the EU Commission has been promoting private enforcement – for example, by developing a legal framework that grants victims of EU antitrust law infringements access to compensation.

The contributions in this book address a range of topics in the area of competition law enforcement, including the role of fines and leniency programmes in public enforcement; access to evidence and the quantification of damages in private enforcement; and the interaction between public and private enforcement of competition law in Europe.

About the Author

Heike Schweitzer holds the chair for private law, European economic law and competition law at the University of Mannheim and is director of the Leibniz Science Campus "Mannheim Centre for Competition and Innovation" (MaCCI). Before joining the Mannheim law faculty, she held the chair for competition law at the European University Institute (Florence, Italy). Her research focus lies in the area of competition law, including competition and regulation of liberalised industries, state aid law and public procurement law.

Kai Hüschelrath is head of the Research Group "Competition and Regulation" at the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim and coordinator of the Leibniz Science Campus "Mannheim Centre for Competition and Innovation" (MaCCI). Since April 2009 he is Assistant Professor of Industrial Organization and Competitive Strategy at the WHU Otto Beisheim School of Management in Vallendar.

This was a great read! I'm an older adult and I still enjoyed it. I loved the paranormal story along with the romance. I was a little surprised when it ended with some questions still remaining. I'm can't wait for the next book to get those questions answered.

It's rare that I find a book that doesn't start to get boring at some point between the beginning and the climax, but I just couldn't put this book down! Almost every page had some new and exciting event that kept me interested and hungry for more!

Awful - Don't waste your time

This was the blandest, most juvenile book I have read. By half-way through I was flipping pages like crazy in the hope that something might happen to save it (like another author taking over the writing).

The reason I disliked it so much is that it read like a fifteen year olds fantasy, where every man is perfect and sooooooo in love with the heroine. Mind you, not one character has a sense of humour or any depth at all and Tara, the best friend, was by far the most annoying of all.

Boring, boring, boring.

A lot has changed...

While retaining the familiar format of the "In Action" series, the revised Schnellboot monograph is substantially different from, and a marked improvement over, the original multi-author work published in 2003. The revised edition contains 22 more pages and over 40 additional photographs (a few of which are in color). The text is more concise and the substantive errors of the original have been corrected. Four new color profiles have been added.

For me, the most useful and appealing enhancement is the inclusion of many more detailed and beautifully executed drawings. The original work contained only two general arrangement drawings (an S 38 with kalotte and an S 100), the other classes being represented only by a profile drawing. The revised edition includes general arrangement (top and side view) drawings for all of the classes, as well as detailed drawings of the torpedo tubes, G7a torpedo, Drehkranz mount for the bow 20mm, perspectives of the 20mm Flak 38 and 37mm Flak M42, radar and radio antenna mountings on the kalotte, and the RZA 5 torpedo sight.

It's definitely a nice addition to any collection of works on small combatants.

An interesting and effective weapon of war

“Schnellboot in Action”, by David L. Krakow, is detailed technical overview and discussion on Germany’s Schnellboote (literally “speedboats”) used during World War II. At 80 pages, it also includes numerous photos of the many classes and variants of the boats and their equipment, scale drawings, and color profiles. But note that the title seems slightly misleading, as this is not a book about combat operations, it’s a book about the Schnellboote (S-boats) themselves.

I’m a history buff, and have read extensively about World War II. I’ve gotten to the point where I’m now reading more and more about the peripheries of the struggle, and when I read that the S-boats were able to continue offensive actions virtually up to the end of the war, my interest was piqued. This type of boat was not going to win or lose the war for the various combatants, but they were capable of many types of missions and roles that were an important part of the overall war effort.

The majority of this book is organized somewhat chronologically, covering the initial German efforts to create effective motor torpedo boats in World War I through their development up to the final days of World War II. Later sections in the book deal with the various weapons, motors, appurtenances, and other specifics used on the boats. This is a very thorough and comprehensive look at the S-boats. The copious pictures included are a strong-point, and are a boon to both the reader wanting to learn more about the boats as well as to the modeler.

The only thing that I would have liked to have seen included, and this is only a very, very mild complaint, was an overall discussion of how the boats were actually operated by their crew … how many enginemen, torpedomen, helmsmen, etc. were there, what their roles were during various points of a mission (assuming that some crew were probably multi-tasked), and how long a typical mission/operation could last (a few hours or a few days?). Much of this information is scattered throughout the book … there are pictures of the radiomen’s stations along with a description of their equipment, as well a listing of how many crewmen (overall) were needed to operate each class of S-Boat. I would have just liked a page or two tying it all together, as the crew is just as an important part of the S-boat as its diesel engines or torpedoes.

But overall, this is a great resource to learn about the German Schnellboote. It’s well written, meticulously researched, and is one of just a handful of books written in English about these boats. Five stars.

About the Author
Geza Vermes was Professor Emeritus of Jewish Studies at the University of Oxford, UK and was one of the world's greatest experts on the historical Jesus, Christian beginnings, and the Dead Sea Scrolls. With the publication of "Jesus the Jew" (1973) he introduced the idea of Jesus as a 1st century Jewish holy man to the general public. His book "The Dead Sea Scrolls in English" (1962) introduced the English reader to the Scrolls, going on to sell over half a million copies.

Clear, understandable, historical analysis

This is a really excellent book on the historical Jesus. It brings out the actual, historical context of the person Jesus (as constrasted with the theological construct of later speculations). It has scholarly depth but is easy to understand by a lay reader. I have enjoyed all of Vermes' books that I have read.

This is a collection of lectures dealing with Jesus' embededness into the Judaism of his time.

Geza Vermes (1924-2013), a very renowned British Bible scholar who also published the Dead Sea Scrolls, applies the methods of historiography, not theology, i.e., his interest is in facts, not in propaganda.

You fail to understand the historical Jesus if you think he was a Christian. Christianity was later. Jesus was a Jew in a Jewish world. Prima facie, that sounds trivial, however, it is not so trivial to see what happens to Jesus when you turn this triviality into a scientific method of posing the appropriate questions concerning the Gospels. We are used to read the New Testament through the glasses of Christianity. But as we can learn from Vermes, this is the best way to deeply misunderstand Jesus since the gravest mistake a historian can make is to assess a phenomenon in the light of later developments.

To add a word as to my very personal reading experience: I rejoiced greatly when I studied these clairvoyant lectures. For I had never before come so close to the Son of Man.

And, behold, while turning the pages, suddenly two men stood by me in white apparel. Which also said unto me: Why sittest thou gazing into that book? For this same Jesus which was taken up into heaven shall so come back in like manner.

And I said unto them, lo, that's glad tidings! But when?

And they answered unto me: July 7, 2016, in the afternoon.

And I kept questioning: Is that a Sabbath.

And they said: Nay, for it is hard work to enter his Kingdom.

And as they had spoken these words unto me, they faded away and only a dense and thick cloud remained in the place where they had stood. So I stopped reading, got up and did at long last the kitchen work. I don't want Jesus to break in on me with all the washing up undone.

The book is wonderful, and Amazon's service was excellent. Vermes is one of the best Judeo-Christian scholars of our era. Before his death he left us fine books, including the best one to date on the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Not quite what I expected

I bought this book hoping to get a gentle introduction to the ubiquitous programming language, Javascript. Being at the 8th edition, it seemed that this book has stood the test of time and were a good choice for an aspiring web developer with no technical background. Actually, I had a bad feeling about this book, when after 5 pages I read the following advice from the authors: "Don't type that code[...] It was tough enough for us to do all the that typing, and there's no reason you should have to repeat that work." Compare this, with the recommandation of another author, Larry Ullman: "I strongly encourage you to type the scripts yourself in order to become more familiar with the structure and syntax of PHP".

The main reason I took a dislike to this book is because it's a tutorial-based text with insufficient explanatory details for understanding the example script code. The examples are unnecessary difficult to comprehend for a beginner because the theory behind the topics being presented, is meager. I was constantly refering to other resources in order to understand the logic behind the code scripts. I'll present an example of this, so you can judge if my complain is justified or not:

Chapter 9, Cookies in JS, says that a cookie is a text string with the following format: cookieName=cookieValue;expires=expirationDateGMT;path=URLpath;domain=siteDomain. Then, a function, setCookie(), is set to construct a cookie, and among other lines, it contains the line: document.cookie = "userName=" + username + ";expires=" + expireDate.toGMTString();
After this, the authors write a function that reads and displays the cookies, with the following lines:

THIS is the ultimate Merle haggard biography!

Unlike the recent autobiography by Tom Carter, this is the book you want to read to get an in-depth, detailed look at the life of Merle Haggard. It's funny, touching, interesting....all kinds of emotions rolled-into one book. The reading is easy, yet it doesn't gloss over the events in Merle's life. It is much more interesting and educational than the new book that is out. I highly recommend it.

Merle Haggard certainly told it like it was. He may not have told it all, but what he did tell will keep you riveted to your seat. He was country music's bad boy for a long time, and is still a little wild and crazy.
His early years in this book ought to be required reading for every young man, according to Johnny Cash, who pointed out that it is easy to get in trouble just for being adventuresome. Well, Merle certainly was that. His voice is clear in every word of this book and if you listen close you can hear him chuckle between the lines because it is guaranteed that the world is not ready to hear "all" of the stories Haggard could tell. These are quite interesting enough, thank you.
Great book. Great story. Too bad it is not a movie! It would put most of the bio movies to shame.
