About the Author
Mark Hutter is a professor of sociology at Rowan University and has served as coordinator of the Bantivoglio Honors Program. He teaches and has an active and ongoing research agenda in both urban studies and family sociology and has extensively published and presented papers in these areas. He is the author of The Changing Family 3rd ed (Allyn and Bacon, 1998) and the editor of The Family Experience 4th ed (Allyn & Bacon, 2004). His scholarship and pedagogical involvement in the field of family studies has received international recognition with the award of the National Council on Family Relations’ Jan Trost Award for Outstanding Contributions to Comparative Family Studies in 2004. He is a past president of the Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction and Alpha Kappa Delta, the International Sociology Honor Society.

Best Urban Textbook Currently on the Market

I teach Urban Sociology and have looked at a number of textbooks. For me, Mark Hutter's book is the best one on the market at the moment. It covers all of the topics one would expect in a textbook and it is well written, for the most part. Although Hutter discusses the main theories in urban sociology, he primarily uses symbolic interactionism to show how people's perceptions of the city are shaped by their social class, race, and gender characteristics and the political economy perspective to illuminate how cities do not just happen, but take shape based on the influence of political, business, and real estate elites. Hutter, for example, discusses how our notions about gender and family shaped the development of shopping in downtown areas and lead to the rise of the suburbs. What sets Hutter's book apart from the rest is that he incorporates a cultural perspective in his analysis of city life. For example, the book has a chapter on the City as Work of Art, where Hutter links impressionist paintings, city life, and the emerging middle class in Paris and the work of Mural artists in Philadelphia to urban redevelopment. There is also a chapter on how skyscrapers reflect the image that corporate interests what to project to the public. Lastly, Hutter looks at connections to others and how urban settings can facilitate or inhibit them, and the consequences of social isolation for people's well-being. Most of the problems that I have with the book revolve around poor editing. There are passages in one paragraph that are repeated in the next one, which suggests that Hutter moved some sentences around for this Second Edition and was not careful about deleting the old material. There are also some mistakes in citations. For example, in discussing George Will's comments on the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the text misspells his last name as Wills multiple times. While minor, these errors detract from the overall quality of Hutter's writing. I
recommended it to anyone teaching a class in Urban Sociology.

Where to begin? "'Begin at the beginning," the King said gravely, "and go on till you come to the end: then stop." (Alice in Wonderland)

Being that I just took Urban Sociology this semester I thought it would be best to go ahead and give my two cents on the text book. "Discovering Cities" isn't a bad text book, but then it isn't the single greatest text book either. It does focus on the basics of Urban Sociology, but there are portions that seems to just skim over. I was lucky enough to have a wonderful professor for the class who seemed to know the material well enough that she was able to provide insight where the book fell short. Still, for a run of the mill text book it's not bad. I would have preferred for it to go deeper into the culture and subcultures of the Urban setting, but then again "we can't always get what we want."

Do I recommend it? Sure if your course is using the book get it, but do I recommend it for a private collection? No, you would be far better off doing research on the Chicago School and going from there.

Good book, great man.

Loved the book. I took an Urban Sociology class last semester & we used this book because my professor was Mark Hutter, the author. Love him & the book so much that I'm taking him again now. Such a cool guy, he's absolutely passionate about what he does & I think it shows in this book as well. I may be biased because I know the man himself but it's an easier read than most textbooks. It flows well & the tone in which it's written made it feel personal & kept my attention.

This loosely written and poorly edited survey of the 13 great houses built by the eight children of Cornelius "Commodore" Vanderbilt's eldest son is part potted social history, part architectural history, and part personal biography. After an introductory chapter on the family antecedents, the book consists of a chapter on each of the houses--Biltmore, Shelburne, the Breakers, Marble House, and others less well known--that the third generation of wealth erected in what Mark Twain labeled "the gilded age." The illustrations, many of the period, are fascinating, but the text is superficial in content and uncertain in tone. Typos, layout mistakes, and an absence of editing make this a bad book on a good topic. Not recommended.

A must have for admirers of the Vanderbilts and their houses

Over the years, I have grown fonder and fonder of the tastes, houses, and lives of the Vanderbilt family. Not only does this book detail all of those attributes, it is also superbly written. I also enjoy the way the book details biographical information of the family along with their favorite hobby- building houses. I also enjoyed the fact that it shows the floor plans and numerous vintage photos of the houses in it. Once I picked it up, I didn't want to put it down! This is truly one of the best books I have ever read! I would also highly recommend, Biltmore Estate: The Most Distinguished Private Place by John M. Bryan.

An excellent resource and fascinating read you'll revisit over and over

I've had this book since it came out and still consider it to be peerless in capturing all that the Vanderbilt heirs attempted to build as monuments to themselves. It is a great read and the amount of research invested to unearth so many top-notch photos is amazing. I'm dismayed at the original remarks from the library reviewer who panned it!

You'll never see more insightful photos as to what happened to Elm Court in Lenox, MA - the largest shingle-style manor house ever built - or even the wealth of historical photos for Shelburne Farm. The latter produced their own smaller hardcover book which pales in comparison to what "Architectural Aspirations" captures in the one chapter devoted to the estate. As an aside, Elm Court rose again with heirs to the family have restored it between 2000 and 2006.

Picking up even a used copy to add to ones collection is something I strongly recommend.

When the kingdom is attacked by evil magic forces, Will helps track down and defeat a couple of particularly nasty beasts. This closing episode sets the stage for a good-versus-evil war that will likely be at the heart of future volumes. In this opener, though, most of the story focuses on the learning process that Will goes through as an apprentice. Descriptions of Ranger craft are fascinating. Exciting confrontations with bullies and wild boars help to establish the boy's emerging character. Side stories involving a rival Battleschool apprentice and the identity of Will's father are woven in smoothly. The author occasionally spells things out more than is needed when actions demonstrate them clearly enough. However, the well-paced plot moves effortlessly toward the climax, letting readers get to know the world and the characters gradually as excitement builds. Soon Will learns that becoming a ranger is more difficult, dangerous, and worthwhile than he had imagined. He earns the respect of his elders and the friendship of a former foe, but all this is prelude to the great adventure that follows, when his skills wielding a knife and keeping a heightened awareness of his surroundings become vital to the survival of his mentor and the safety of the kingdom. The last few years have seen the publication of many fantasies, but few have the appeal of this original story. Rather than creating a host of strange creatures and magical powers, Flanagan concentrates on character, offering readers a young protagonist they will care about and relationships that develop believably over time. Will's world is a colorful place, threatened by an evil warlord and his fierce minions, but it's the details of everyday living and the true-to-life emotions of the people that are memorable. Excellent series

A terrific series. My son started reading them and asked me to do so as well. I was skeptical but by about 20 pages into the first volume I was hooked. I have now devoured all 9 of them, and may well go back and read them all again in a year or two.

The main characters begin as children but grow up quickly throughout the series. Unlike too many "young adult" books, the adults are more interesting than the children, and the children realize that becoming an adult is something to strive for rather than resist.

All of the books are very funny as well as exciting. The "good guys" all have a wry sense of humor (obviously the author's as well), while the "bad guys" are typically overbearing and too serious. Children also fail to grasp the humor; growing up is shown as (in part) a process of coming to understand (and use) a rather dry wit with one's friends.

These are "sword and sorcery" type books, except that there doesn't seem to be any sorcery! Several people claim to have magical type powers, but the powers seem to all be fake, and the people who claim them are all bad guys. Several strange religious prophets also turn out to be hucksters.

The battle scenes are realistically told (though the skills of the protagonists are not always realistic). Death is not whitewashed; bones break and blood spurts and it HURTS. There is a realism to the entire series that is a wonderful change from typical "fantasy" fare.

There is no sex and only minimal time is given to love. The major virtues and concerns of the characters are honor, patience, friendship, a skeptical intelligence, and hard work. The characters struggle to master themselves and become better people.

In short: realistic, serious, and honest books about growing up -- all in a fun "epic fantasy" package. Highly recommended.

This book kept a bunch of 12 year olds reading

I got this book from our local library 2 weeks ago. My 12 year old son read it, and loved it so much he loaned it to a friend, who loaned it to a friend, who loaned it to a friend. Yes it was passed around THAT much. I was taking a group of them to church Wednesday night and the were talking excitedly about what sounded like a really awesome new movie, and when I asked them what the were talking about, of course, it was this book. My son was bummed to find out our library doesn't have the 2nd book of the series yet, so I'm here to buy them for Christmas.

After I had purchased the book a friend mentioned to me that the book was listed for the tweens audience. I thought of returning it but I am glad I didn't because the book is great! Flanagan writes very well and obviously understands a wide range of male age groups. I am 40 and I was hooked after the 2nd chapter. You really do start to like all the main characters and I can't wait for the next installments. And no I am not biased because my name is Will as well. ;-)

This book is well written and very entertaining. I recommend it for those with a good imagination and a appreciation for strong character writing.

Ok book, needs textbook supplement.

Is a one-time use due to being printed on cheap paper. The information it contains is fine. These are audit case examples with questions, there is no teaching material in this book. Unless you know auditing, supplement this book with an audit textbook (anything printed after 2010) or you may not do well in the class. Some information can come off internet, but you really need an audit textbook to get a decent grade. Read all the cases (about 1 hour total) at the beginning of the class to save tons of time during the class.
