Breaking Point (Article 5 Book 2), by Kristen Simmons

Kristen Simmons' fast-paced, gripping YA dystopian series continues in Breaking Point.

After faking their deaths to escape from prison in Article 5, Ember Miller and Chase Jennings have only one goal: to lay low until the Federal Bureau of Reformation forgets they ever existed.

Near-celebrities now for the increasingly sensationalized tales of their struggles with the government, Ember and Chase are recognized and taken in by the Resistance—an underground organization working to systematically take down the government. At headquarters, all eyes are on the sniper, an anonymous assassin taking out FBR soldiers one by one. Rumors are flying about the sniper's true identity, and Ember and Chase welcome the diversion….

Until the government posts its most-wanted list, and their number one suspect is Ember herself.

Orders are shoot to kill, and soldiers are cleared to fire on suspicion alone. Suddenly Ember can't even step onto the street without fear of being recognized, and "laying low" is a joke. Even members of the Resistance are starting to look at her sideways.

With Chase urging her to run, Ember must decide: Go into hiding…or fight back?

From Booklist
The story that began in Article 5 (2012) continues here as 17-year-old Ember and her boyfriend, former Moral Militia soldier Chase, try to outrun the Federal Bureau of Reformation (FBR). And run and run. There is so much running—including when the duo becomes part of the Resistance—that the choppy story never manages to quite coalesce. Even those who like action might find what’s here a little hard to follow. Still, this has some good character development as Ember and Chase attempt to become closer to each other, in spite of the fact that there is still so much bad history between them. When the character of Tucker, the soldier who killed Ember’s mother, is reintroduced, there’s plenty of opportunity for skepticism as he tries to prove to Ember and Chase that he is not the wind-up soldier he once was. Simmons has put a lot of heart into her characters, so readers will want to follow them to the next book. But the momentum seems to be with the FBR. Watch out, guys. Grades 7-12, --Ilene Cooper

A Dystopian Society Like No Other!
By AGeeGee
While I was somewhat iffy on the first book in this series, "Article 5" (primarily because of Ember), I did find this to be a vast improvement (it's clear that Kristen is growing tremendously as an author)- however, it's not without its faults. Personally I feel that this book suffers from "second book syndrome", to a degree. After finishing it and sitting back to consider it I found myself thinking, "That's it? All that this story centered around was trying to rescue Rebecca?" I just don't think that it was as near epic than it should have been/ there was really only one basic story line (especially when taking into consideration that there were SO many other elements that could have been added- I mean, they are living in an essentially war torn dictatorship where every single one of their actions is monitored, not unlike that of "The Hunger Games" or "Matched").

That being said, the dystopian world that Kristen has concocted is one of the best I have ever read of before (and I consider myself to be somewhat of a post-apocalyptic/ dystopian connoisseur, almost everything that I read in 2012 falling within the two genres). Her world building is second to none and I think that many authors of this genre could learn a lesson or two from her (there is an actual back story, folks!).

Furthermore, I loved that there was actual growth- in both the characters and in relationships. While Ember was somewhat whiny and nerve-grating in "Article 5" in this book she understood what was at stake and she stepped up to the plate, doing what no one else was able to. While Ember and Chase's relationship didn't play a massive role, I savored every moment that it did. Their relationship was one of the most mature and least superficial that I can ever recall reading in a YA before.

All in all, I think that there was an even balance between things that I enjoyed in this novel and things that I didn't quite so much- regardless, I am quite looking forward to the next, and final, installment of this series, "Glass Arrow"!

A Thrill-Ride Of A Scecond Book!
By Alicia
4.5 Stars

BREAKING POINT is another hit from Kristen Simmons! Seriously, it was phenomenal! BREAKING POINT delivered everything I hoped it would! Through out this entire book my heart was pounding, my hands were shaking, and my fingers were turning the pages faster then I could read them! I just HAD to know what was coming next! I couldn't get enough of BREAKING POINT, and when I was finished I was ready to dive right back into this world with THREE! It just that good!

THE PLOT...

BREAKING POINT picks up where ARTICLE 5 left off, with Ember and Chase declared dead by the Federal Bureau of Reformation's. The new government that has taken the Bill of Rights from citizens and created the Moral Statutes, where no one has any rights that the FBR has not given them. They are cruel and ruthless, and will kill thousands of innocents if that's what needs to be done to keep the control!

But there are the ones that are fighting back. The ones who have had enough of their cruelty, and murder, and are not standing for it anymore! The ones that will save them all from Federal Bureau of Reformation's! The Resistance!

Ember and Chase are among the resistance, just trying to survive and stay off the FBR's radar. And it's been fairly easy with the distraction from the sniper picking off guards left and right! That is until Ember's faked death is revealed, and she is put back in the spotlight. But this time it's worse then it's ever been! They've marked her as 1 of the 5 conspirators to the sniper, but that's not all, there's a kill on sight order! If they even think it's Ember, then they have the order to shoot first and ask questions later. Ember just singed the death warrant of any girls that might look like her! And that's a heavy weight to bare!

Ember has voweled to write the wrongs she has done when she was in the rehabilitation center, when her friend Rebecca was beat by the guards and sent to another rehabilitation center, because of her...

Sean, the boy she blackmailed to help break her out of the rehabilitation center, and Rebecca's boyfriend has become like family, and he his determined to get Rebecca back. Ember knows without her none of this would of happened to them. So Ember, Chase, Sean, and a unexpected and VERY unlikely "Allie" will fight their way through the resistance, FBR, and any citizens that get in their way in finding Rebecca and making it to the safe house alive!

But it won't be easy, and what happens when they find her? They still have to keep fighting! It's not over, it never will be! Not until the Federal Bureau of Reformation's is destroyed...FOR GOOD!

Wow, that was such an emotional packed adventure! I loved Ember and Chase's connection in the BREAKING POINT. In ARTICLE 5, they were broken, torn, and felt betrayed. They had this gap between them that they didn't have in BREAKING POINT! Chase was so over protective of Ember, but still respectful of her decisions and didn't stand "Too" much in the way when she wanted to do something he didn't like. I loved them together, they just had this chemistry that was electrifying, and HOT!!!

From now on when I see a book with Kristen Simmons name on it, I will be quick to pick it up and give it a shot! She is an phenomenal writer, and has broken my heart and repaired it over and over again! THANK YOU Kristen Simmons for such an emotional packed ride through the vicious city's within The ARTICLE 5 Series! :)

Overall, this is bombshell of a second book! It did NOT in NO WAY suffer from the second book syndrome! Nope, it really exceeded my exceptions for a thrilling follow-up to ARTICLE 5. And I am SO ready to finish this epic journey and battle for freedom from the deadly Federal Bureau of Reformation's!

The Paper Critic - Review
By Ryan Grooms
This book had me confused and torn apart, I wanted it to be better, I wanted the plot and the characters to grow and I felt more let down than anything. Ember was a brilliant strong woman at the end of Article 5, and yet in the beginning of this book she reverts back to her own self indulgent lonely self. She is hiding in the bunker of the resistance counting and labeling. There is so much more I wanted and expected from Ember at this point, but it's like she's afraid to lose everything close around her that she's secluded herself into a world that just can't keep going on if nothing changes.

Chase in the beginning is the one out in the open. He's the one helping and doing things, but that's always been Chase. The dependable one that seems to be thinking and working for the whole greater good of the two together. However, as Ember's character realizes she can't sit on the sidelines much longer and wants to help, he's the one trying to tell her no. Honestly I can't say that I blame him; if I loved someone as much as he did, I would fight to protect them and that seems to be what he's doing more so than anything. Furthermore. Chase in this book shows his military side more prevalent than in the previous book, and it shows just how vulnerable and how aggressive he can be. He's the character that made me smile and frankly brought this book a higher rating than it did.

Sean was a refreshing character, and his love for his girlfriend and the compete pursuit of her drives him crazy. He's as much like Chase, but not exactly. He comes from the FBR and seems to be more emotional and driven than Chase. Sean is the one who will jump first and think later, whereas Chase seems to think a bit more and be more cautious. The rash and dying devotion of Sean, is what makes his character refreshing and unique. I loved seeing his pain and sorrow, every time Rebecca was brought to the forefront.

The good thing of this book, and the one thing that stayed similar was the imagery and the scenery. Simmons can create a world unlike any other. I would say this world is more PG oriented, and I missed the first books gore and grotesque side. I wanted that dark gritty world, it's what made Article 5 fearsome and showed just how cruel the world was around them. Now in Breaking Point the only bit of grotesque was a different display, the RBF were shown parading people around who defied and were unable to do anything or just deformed in some way as a show of what it meant to defy the RBF. It just wasn't enough, the fear it instilled was unique, but lacked the emotional tole on the reader.

Now the other point I disliked about this book was the plot. The whole plot seemed to focus around Rebecca, Seans's lost girlfriend. It's been done over and over, and the more I look and think about the plots and the different events, I found that I had almost expected more originality out of this book. I was hoping there would be something more than just rescue the girl and run to safety. However, there just wasn't that much else to this book and I found I couldn't wrap my head around that. The struggle against the government is an addition by this is a dystopia that's to be expected, and I disregard that.

Overall this was just above a mediocre book. The character growth of a few of the characters was great and provided the spark to keep me interested, as well as the scenery and the world building. The plot was less than to be expected and at times I found myself knowing what the next turn would be. There was still a few surprises (no spoilers), but they weren't as often as I would have liked to keep me interested or give this book a better score. Furthermore the gritty and dark twisted nature of Article 5 was lost here, and I missed that most of all. I wanted to see more dark gritty nature in this book, that made the character quake in fear, but it wasn't there.

The Dynamite Club: How a Bombing in Fin-de-Siècle Paris Ignited the Age of Modern Terror, by John Merriman

The fascinating story of a long-forgotten "war on terror" that has much in common with our own

On a February evening in 1894, a young radical intellectual named Émile Henry drank two beers at an upscale Parisian restaurant, then left behind a bomb as a parting gift. This incident, which rocked the French capital, lies at the heart of The Dynamite Club, a mesmerizing account of Henry and his cohorts and the war they waged against the bourgeoisie—setting off bombs in public places, killing the president of France, and eventually assassinating President McKinley in 1901.

Paris in the belle époque was a place of leisure, elegance, and power. Newly electrified, the city’s wide boulevards were lined with posh department stores and outdoor cafés. But prosperity was limited to a few. Most lived in dire poverty, and workers and intellectuals found common cause in a political philosophy—anarchism—that embraced the overthrow of the state by any means necessary.

Yet in targeting civilians to achieve their ends, the dynamite bombers charted a new course. Seeking martyrdom, believing fervently in their goal, and provoking a massive government reaction that only increased their ranks, these "evildoers" became, in effect, the first terrorists in modern history.

Surprising and provocative, The Dynamite Club is a brilliantly researched account that illuminates a period of dramatic social and political change—and subtly asks us to reflect upon our own.

Starred Review. Those who think of terrorism as an inexplicable evil produced by an alien culture will have their eyes opened by this fascinating study of 19th-century anarchist terrorists. Yale historian Merriman (History of Modern Europe) tells the story of Émile Henry, a well-educated young man from a politically radical family who tossed a bomb into a crowded Paris cafe in 1894. In Merrimans portrait, Henry emerges as an understandable, if not sympathetic, figure—a sensitive dreamer whose outrage at the misery of the poor curdled into a fanatical hatred of bourgeois society. He found a home in Europes percolating anarchist movement, whose adherents celebrated a cult of revolutionary violence and sang hymns to Lady Dynamite; their bombings and assassinations set off a wave of panic and police repression. Merrimans account frames an illuminating study of working-class radicalism in belle époque France and its bitter conflict with the establishment in an age when class warfare was no metaphor. Its also an absorbing true crime story, with Dostoyevskian overtones, about high ideals that motivate desperate acts. Photos. (Feb. 12)

From Booklist
A notable scholar of French history, Merriman recounts an episode of terrorism in 1890s Paris that plumbs the motivations of one particular bomber. He was Émile Henry, who at age 20 rejected a potential career in the French army and embraced anarchism. In his narrative, Merriman brings forth biographical elements about Henry—his father was active in the Paris Commune, bloodily suppressed in an all-out 1871 class war—that illuminate his adoption of a radical outlook. Of an intellectual cast of mind, Henry read anarchist classics by Pyotr Kropotkin, novels by Émile Zola, and volunteered for anarchist newspapers. Anarchism’s issue of the day was whether workers’ liberation would come by revolutionary word or revolutionary deed; in this debate, Henry came down on the side of deeds, galvanized, Merriman suggests, by two anarchists who went unflinchingly to the guillotine for their bombings. Reconstructing Henry’s own attacks, Merriman allies a forensic eye with the texture of Paris de la belle époque, ably renders Henry’s personality, and implicitly invites comparison of his with the mind-sets of contemporary terrorists. --Gilbert Taylor

Review

Praise for The Dynamite Club

"In The Dynamite Club, John Merriman brings together his astonishing knowledge of nineteenth-century France, his unmatched skills as an archival ‘detective,’ his marvelously lucid writing style, and his uncanny talent for bringing historical figures to life. The result is a searing portrait of the tensions and violence that lurked behind the glittering façade of fin-de-siècle France and eerily foreshadowed the terrorist threat of the present day." — David Bell, author of The Cult of the Nation in France and The First Total War

"Those who think of terrorism as an inexplicable evil produced by an alien culture will have their eyes opened by this fascinating study of nineteenth-century anarchist terrorists . . . [An] absorbing true crime story, with Dostoyevskian overtones, about high ideals that motivate desperate acts." — Publishers Weekly, starred review

"John Merriman has told an absorbing story of the strange world of anarchism in late-nineteenth-century France. Replete with uncanny and uncomfortable similarities to the ‘war on terrorism’ today, The Dynamite Club portrays a society swept up in the fear of bombers who are certain that they are achieving immortality for a righteous cause. This saga of Émile Henry and his motley crew of fellow anarchists is hard to put down." — David Kertzer, author of The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara and Amalia’s Tale

“A notable scholar of French history, Merriman recounts an episode of terrorism in 1890s Paris that plumbs the motivations of one particular bomber. He was Émile Henry, who at age 20 rejected a potential career in the French army and embraced anarchism…Reconstructing Henry’s own attacks, Merriman allies a forensic eye with the texture of Paris de la belle Époque, ably renders Henry’s personality, and implicitly invites comparison of his with the mind-sets of contemporary terrorists.” (Booklist 2009-01-01)

"Merriman leads the reader through a succinct history of anarchism and the rise of dynamite during this period...[his] account complements other sources on the history of terrorism by putting a human face on this and other acts. Well told and thoroughly researched..." (Library Journal 2008-12-01)

"Reading a book on nineteenth-century anarchism by John Merriman is a bit like reading one on the semicolon by Strunk and White. Merriman’s A History of Modern Europe (1996) is perhaps the best survey of the era, but by narrowing his scope from five hundred years of Continental history to a few bomb-throwing anarchists in Belle Epoque France, he is able to pack in riveting detail. " (Bookforum 2009-02-01)

"Brisk and well-written, continually directing our attention toward contemporary analogues." (Kirkus Reviews 2008-12-01)

"Questioning why terrorists attack people like us may lead to answers that call for us to examine our own roles in creating and maintaining the social, economic or political conditions that give rise to terrorist acts. This examination is what makes The Dynamite Club so important. Merriman demythologizes Émile Henry and the loosely organized international group of anarchist thinkers who inspired and supported him. Merriman also comments, without being heavy-handed, on the conditions European anarchists were trying to change." (Texas Observer 2009-01-09)

"Merriman paints a fascinating picture of the anarchist underworld, giving real-life background to a milieu made famous by novels such as Joseph Conrad's The Secret Agent and G. K. Chesterton's The Man Who Was Thursday." (Barnes and Noble Review 2009-02-23)

"Those who think of terrorism as an inexplicable evil produced by an alien culture will have their eyes opened by this fascinating study of 19th-century anarchist terrorists." (San Francisco Examiner 2009-02-08)

"Yale historian John Merriman does many things in "The Dynamite Club," his book about the bombing, and does them quite well...In describing the fate of a single terrorist, Merriman has skillfully illustrated how social alienation fueled the rise of extremist ideas and acts. The lethal impulses that motivated Henry aren't so different, the author concludes, from the impulses that lead to terrorism today. This accessible account is historically eye-opening and psychologically insightful." (The Boston Globe 2009-02-26)

"Written with elegant brevity, The Dynamite Club is a reminder of an era when violent anarchists acted out their hatred against a repressive civilization." (The Shepherd Express 2009-04-01)

"Gripping as a narrative, necessary as a historical lesson, Merriman's "The Dynamite Club" reads like a great novel -- all in the service of bringing novel insight into the birth of modern terrorism." (Minneapolis Star Tribune 2009-04-14)

"In The Dynamite Club, his enthralling and cinematic account of a Paris cafe bombing in 1894, Merriman achieves that rare thing: virtuosic storytelling that doubles as superb history." (Chicago Tribune 2009-05-16)

The Dynamite Club
By Stephen Balbach
John Merriman, professor of history at Yale and author of the classic undergraduate text A History of Modern Europe: From the Renaissance to the Present, has been called America's best living historian of France. Born and raised in Oregon, he has lived in France on and off much of his life and is skilled at bridging the cultural divide. In our current "age of terror" it is illuminating to remember that for about a 15-20 year period during the "fin-de-siecle" (end of the 19th century), Paris was gripped by a wave of Anarchist Dynamite bombers. The central story of this book is about one of those Dynamiters, Emile Henry, the first terrorist to bomb anonymous otherwise innocent civilians and, according to the subtitle, "ignite the modern age of terror."

`The Dynamite Club` is a small package (216pg, 8.5" book) but, like the subject of its title, packs a wallop amount of information. Using the creative non-fiction technique of writing history through telling the narrative story of a central hero (or anti-hero in this case), it is a biography of Emile and the bombing and its aftermath - and also the larger story of Anarchism in the 19th century. We learn about the underground world of Paris and London, teeming with hungry, unemployed and angry youth, the revolutionary intellectuals who inspired them and the state enforcement that emerged with them. Merriman not only dug deep into the archives, he traveled to the locations involved (some still in business), even retracing the steps of Emile Henry through the streets of Paris the day of his bombing, clocking the amount of time it took to verify his story (luckily traffic in Paris today is so bad, travel resembles the speed of 19th century horse and carriage).

This is a really fascinating and accessible introduction to the world of 19th century Anarchism - one of the defining characteristics of fin-de-siecle Europe. Merriman is a serious historian and I had trouble finding anything that appeared embellished, unfortunately so common with journalist-historians these days writing for a popular audience. Merriman teaches a course at Yale called "France since 1871" (18hrs, 24 classes). It has been video recorded and is freely available online for anyone to watch (see link in the Comment below). Merriman is a dynamic and fun teacher to watch. The first 12 or so classes are about France between 1871 and 1914 and it is a great introduction to everything "fin-de-siecle". Lecture 8 in particular is called "Dynamite Club: The Anarchists", and was recorded while he was working on this book.

Dynamiting to End Society
By Rob Hardy
It might make headlines when some nightclub or hotel is bombed, but such headlines might not even make it onto the front page these days, for unfortunately such occurrences are frequent. This sort of terrorism was new and startling in 1894 when a bomber attacked the Café Terminus in Paris. It may not have been the very first incidence of modern terrorism, but it was part of a new type of attack on society. Such attacks could not have happened without dynamite or without philosophical and social underpinnings. A wealth of details about such larger issues, and about that particular bombing, is set out with impressive clarity in _The Dynamite Club: How a Bombing in Fin-de-Siècle Paris Ignited the Age of Modern Terror_ (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) by Yale historian John Merriman. It was Émile Henry who executed the attack, and Merriman writes, "This book is motivated by a very simple question: why did Émile Henry do what he did?" It was a long time ago, and in a foreign society with different bad guys than we have now, but it is bracing to have Merriman as a guide to a frightening act which introduced the world to a completely new type of threat, one which came from an individual who was not completely an outsider and not completely mad.

Henry grew up within the anarchist philosophy, but Merriman makes clear that the wide inequalities between rich and poor at the time made such a philosophy seem tenable: "In short, the belle époque was not _belle_ for most French men and women, who had little reason for optimism and great concern for the future." Henry won prizes for excellence in school, but as he became older, he was obsessed with the grinding poverty in Paris; his sympathies were always with the jobless and hungry. Most anarchists were not interested in violence, and many rejected the bombings that were called "propaganda by the deed." Even Henry initially rejected the use of dynamite, but later accepted it as a way of destroying even the bourgeoisie who kept the state going. There were dynamite attacks in Paris in 1892, and Parisians worried about an international dynamite club. As befits anarchists, however, there was no such organization, and the dynamite club was only as real as the worried imaginations of officials could make it. Merriman describes Henry's bombing of the Café Terminus as the first time a political terrorist had used ordinary people as a specific target. Henry was caught as he fled, and met the guillotine in May 1894. The French government passed outrageous laws in overreaction to the threat of the imaginary dynamite club, and Merriman explains how police informers arranged for hundreds of people to be arrested with meager convictions resulting.

Merriman is wise in seldom drawing parallels to modern terrorism, which chiefly comes not from those who would abolish governments but who would set up strict religious ones. Anyone reading about the overreaction of the French government, however, will be dismayed that our contemporary terrorists have led us into an unnecessary war, restrictions on rights, and state-sponsored torture. Merriman's accessible history usefully illustrates how over a hundred years ago activists responding to social alienation and socioeconomic inequities brought forth extremist acts that triggered unnecessary paranoia rather than a coherent judicial response. Anarchism is passé, but the bombing never stops.

A dynamite of a book!
By Paul Gelman
The terrorists of these days had some good teachers and precursors in the past. These were the anarchists of the nineteenth century whose purpose was to bring to a radical change of the world order. The state was regarded by them as something evil which,in Proudhon's words,"is my enemy. To be governed is to be watched, inspected, spied upon,directed,law-driven,numbered,regulated,enrolled,indoctrinated,preached at,controlled, checked, estimated, valued, censured, commanded by creatures who have neither the right not the wisdom or virtue to do so".Anarchism was a reaction to the rapidly expanding power of governments following the creation of nation-states in the nineteenth century.Expanding bureaucracies, police forces, amd armies manifested power.Anarchists were confident that a new, improved society could exist one day,but they believed that violent revolution was a prerequisite, in contrast to those adherents who preached for socialism. Most of the anarchists were far from being intellectuals. But the hero of this book was different, because he was a middle-class youn educated man who might have enjoyed a productive life, were it not for his father's treatment at the hands of the state, exarcerbated by the appalling poverty that he witnessed in Paris.
One day,on a February evening of 1894,Emile Henry drank two beers at a Parisian restaurant, then left behind a bomb. What follows is a most intriguing tale of suspense and history of anarchism before, during and after Henry's deed. The French society like many other European ones, was extremely anxious, living in constant fear of bombers who were certain they were achieving immortality for a very good cause.Suffice it to remind the reader about the murders of the Spansi prime minister Canovas in 1897,Empress Elizabeth of Austria-Hungary in 1898,and the American president William McKinley in 1901.
This excellent book traces the thoughts and deeds of Henry, his trial and his execution and is a major contribution to the history of anarchism. It allows the novice to this topic to get acquainted with the world these anarchists wanted to get at and discusses in detail the work of the Paris police. We also have a very good description about another center where those anarchists were to be found-London.In targeting civilians to achieve their ends, the dynamite bombers charted a new course which managed to change the way the internal security forces in the various states started to view them.

The American Horseshoe Crab, by Carl N. Shuster, H. Jane Brockmann, Robert B. Barlow

The American horseshoe crab that comes ashore on the East Coast in vast numbers to mate and nest is much the same creature that haunted the coast before the time of the dinosaurs. It is among the world's most intensely studied marine invertebrates, critical to our understanding of many groups of organisms, both modern and extinct, and crucial to the ecology of large estuaries such as the Delaware Bay. Some stocks of this great survivor, whose ancestors made it through the mass extinction some 286 million years ago, have been severely depleted today because of overfishing and habitat destruction.

Carl N. Shuster, Jr., H. Jane Brockmann, and Robert B. Barlow are at the forefront of research on Limulus polyphemus, and in this book they bring together twenty scientists who have worked on all aspects of horseshoe crab biology to compile the first fully detailed, comprehensive view of the species. An indispensable resource, the volume describes the horseshoe crab's behavior, natural history, and ecology; its anatomy, physiology, distribution, development, and life cycle; the puzzle of its immune system; and its present management and future conservation.

Review
Overall, The American Horseshoe Crab is a fine compendium of information, one I will refer to frequently. The volume also provides an essential tool for anyone involved with developing the regulations that will be required to protect this intriguing species in perpetuity. (Mark S. Garland Science 2004-05-21)

[This] has to be the most thorough book on this amazing creature ever written or ever likely to be written. It is a compilation of essays by some of the crab's foremost researchers...It would be a sad loss if this book were destined merely for reference shelves and university libraries. Each section has its entry point for the novice, its tidbit of fascinating information, ripe for mining by anyone with an inquisitive mind. (Sandy Bauers Philadelphia Inquirer 2004-06-14)

Look inside The American Horseshoe Crab and you'll find everything you ever wanted to know about these living trilobite lookalikes from their much filmed shoreline mating to their historic use as fertiliser. This wonderfully illustrated and detailed compendium of information about the horseshoe or king crab is a must for anyone interested in marine arthropods both fossil and living. (Douglas Palmer New Scientist 2004-09-11)

This book is a superbly produced synthesis of modern knowledge, in 15 chapters written by 20 experts. It is fully illustrated, with 33 colour plates and many line drawings, and there is an extensive bibliography...This scholarly text is essential for all serious students of arthropods. And it is eminently readable, too. (Euan N. K. Clarkson BBC Wildlife 2004-12-01)

Sedimentology and Sedimentary Basins: From Turbulence to Tectonics, by Mike R. Leeder

The sedimentary record on Earth stretches back more than 4.3 billion years and is present in more abbreviated forms on companion planets of the Solar System, like Mars and Venus, and doubtless elsewhere. Reading such planetary archives correctly requires intimate knowledge of modern sedimentary processes acting within the framework provided by tectonics, climate and sea or lake level variations. The subject of sedimentology thus encompasses the origins, transport and deposition of mineral sediment on planetary surfaces.

The author addresses the principles of the subject from the viewpoint of modern processes, emphasising a general science narrative approach in the main text, with quantitative background derived in enabling ‘cookie’ appendices. The book ends with an innovative chapter dealing with how sedimentology is currently informing a variety of cognate disciplines, from the timing and extent tectonic uplift to variations in palaeoclimate. Each chapter concludes with a detailed guide to key further reading leading to a large bibliography of over 2500 entries. The book is designed to reach an audience of senior undergraduate and graduate students and interested academic and industry professionals.

Sedimentary geology as an integrated discipline...
By Dario Ventra
I think Leeder's textbook will appeal to anyone who's striving to learn more about sedimentology and dynamic stratigraphy. It's a concise, yet thorough introduction to many topics selected within the vast, ever-expanding (and worryingly so! ) field of sedimentary geology... The author's main goal was probably to provide readers with a clear sense of how well integrated sedimentary geology now is with many other branches of earth and life sciences, physics and chemistry. And in my opinion that aim is succesfully achieved. The book will be suitable read to all those who have already taken an introductory, comprehensive course in sedimentology, on the look for something else to be inspired in their reflections. Reading through many of the chapters, newcomers will learn how sedimentology gained many precious contributions from other sciences, as well as just how much of a contribution the discipline itself can be to the whole bandwagon of geology. It takes a holistic approach to Earth system science to highlight this, and the book hits this mark real well...
I appreciated particularly a brief, separate chapter dealing with the properties and stuctures of fine, cohesive sediments, which is a refreshing perspective on the physical and dynamical sedimentology of muds... And a longer one introducing sediment sources as resulting from the interaction of tectonics and erosional processes. What left me rather disappointed was a too cursory mention of base-level control on sedimentary successions, and its logical development into sequence stratigraphy, not as a preconceived model but as a new philosophy in tackling with the complexity of the stratigraphical record. But something had to be probably neglected or the tome would have become real cumbersome to handle physically! Also, I wonder whether Coriolis force really bears any influence upon such small-scale systems as lakes...? But this is an aside... All in all, the book is enjoyable and informative, the author's style pleasant and clear, the artwork excellent, and if you wanted to try out something alternative for mumbling on the hidden meanings of sands, muds and other slimy stuff we like so much, having a go at this book would be very much worth the price...

By Angelus
I enjoyed Bill Lewis' "Bowhunting" so much I decided to take a look at this one on spearfishing which I have had an on-again-off-again interest in for years. This is just as good and delivers the same level of detail regarding the best ways to start off spearfishing, improve and enjoy the sport. Great book for novices and the more experienced alike. Once again, highly recommended.

Scam - 20 page book? Ultimate guide - joker.
By Samborne J. Vogel
How can a 20 page "article" ever be the "ultimate guide" to any subject. Total opportunism. Maybe should mention that it is only 20 pages!
