Very good book, but the kindle version is terrible!!!

Terrible layout for the kindle version. The questions are simply stuck together on each other as a plain text. It makes difficult to reading and search for a question. I repented to having bought the kindle version instead of the paper version.

I really expect that they will make an update!!!

In the next six chapters the multiple integral representation of nonlinear creep and relaxation, and simplifications to single integral forms and incompressibility, are examined at length. After a consideration of other representations, general relations are derived, then expanded to components of stress or strain for special cases. Both constant stress (or strain) and variable states are described, together with methods of determining material constants. Conversion from creep to relaxation, effects of temperature and stress analysis problems in nonlinear materials are also treated here.
Finally, Chapter 13 discusses experimental methods for creep and stress relaxation under combined stress. This chapter considers especially those experimental problems which must be solved properly when reliable experimental results of high precision are required. Six appendices present the necessary mathematical background, conversion tables, and more rigorous derivations than employed in the text. An extensive updated bibliography completes the book.

Non-linear Materials

It is not easy to find a good book about any kind of non-linear phenomena, such as plasticity or viscous-elasticity. I found this book very complete and clear. It has a brief introduction to elasticity and plasticity, followed by the theory of viscous-elastic materials. I gave four stars to it because it is a reprint and not a new book. For this reason some more recent concepts of viscous-elastic materials are not shown, but it steal is an excellent introductory book.

Sklar's first key conclusion is that when the context is sin, certain sins also pollute; so 'atonement' may include some element of _purification_. His second conclusion is that, when the context is impurity, and _kipper_ means not 'atone' but 'effect purgation', impurity also _endangers_; so _kipper_ can include some element of _ransoming_. In fact, sin and impurity, while distinct categories in themselves, have this in common: each of them requires both ransoming and purification. It is for this reason that _kipper_ can be used in both settings. This benchmark study concludes with a careful examination of the famous sentence of Leviticus 17.11 that 'blood makes atonement' (_kipper_) and explains how, in the Priestly ideology, blood sacrifice was able to accomplish both ransom and purification.

Great Monograph

This is a very fine monograph--a must for any serious study of Leviticus. Sklar did this work under Gordon Wenham and the influence is clear throughout, but he certainly advances some of the key concepts well beyond Wenham's justly famous work. The issues of sin and impurity, and their pairing acts of sacrifice and atonement, sit at the heart of Leviticus both as a text and cultural artifact. And Sklar puts forward a clear and persuasive account of their place in the priestly literature and cultural setting.

I am a preacher (ex-academic) and highly recommend this work to preachers, though the price may seem rather prohibitive. It will take you to the heart of the great book of Leviticus and provide more than sufficient fodder for sermons and theology. I am told that Sklar will soon be publishing the Leviticus commentary in the popular Tyndale series. That is certain to be a must-buy.

A nice introduction but...

This book is a nice introduction on DPOV, but I was looking for much more and more in depth on the subject. If you don't know what a DPOV is, then this book is for you. If you're fimiliar with it, it will not give you depth you're looking for.

There are things the writer hasn't mentioned which I consider basics. I wish this writer would check with other writers to add to this small booklet and correct the author's mishaps.

Some of the examples given weren't that deep. Same expressions sounded like cliche. And anything that's overused will ruin that dream.

Some of the things just weren't explained right and confused me.

For example:

"We should not indicate to our reader what the POVC is feeling or thinking or doing before we have delivered the cause and effect always"!

Hmmm

I might agree with not telling the feeling, but the rest is misleading. It's if you would ask, "What came first?: an egg or a chicken?" Something has to come first.
Thoughts precede actions. But you don't have to write each thought before the action. Another rule in writing is to start with action and explain later.

And I don't see anything wrong with using prepositional phrases. That shouldn't even be taken into consideration. If a sentence is telling, naming the emotion, or violating the order, that's the reason why it isn't in DPOV.

And consider the following:

"A sigh heaved between my lips..."

I don't consider the above DPOV. Who thinks that way? If you're in the character's head and using DPOV, you wouldn't think that. I sighted works much better. A sigh doesn't leave from another part of the body. It's overwritten.

I found other sentences that the author said are written in DPOV, but for me they don't work well. They take me out of that dream. To write from a DPOV, you need to keep your reader dreaming.

This booklet is very short, includes a lot of worksheets. It shouldn't have been made into a book but given to readers on the author's blog. It was way overpriced.

Simply the best!

This book will challenge any writer, no matter how experienced, to a higher standard of the craft. Jill Elizabeth Nelson changed the way I write my fiction. Going "deep" eliminated several problems in my writing and created others, e.g., working harder at characterization, avoiding lazy language, and writing in a linear fashion.

Be afraid! After reading Rivet Your Readers (three times in a row), I found examples of shallow POV everywhere in my WIP. Thankfully, with the help of Ms. Nelson's examples, I know how to rewrite for better effect. If you're unsure of the difference between shallow POV and deep POV, this short, pithy book will make it clear. So, fellow writers, prepare to be challenged and sensitized.

Excellent explanation of Point of View

As an editor, one of the biggest problems I see, especially from new authors, is difficulty with point of view. This book is the answer to that problem. It not only explains point of view simply and clearly, it provides excellent examples that help authors understand exactly what they need to do to improve their writing and make their stories come alive. I will definitely recommend this book to each and every one of my authors and I plan to reread it and apply the techniques to improve my own writing as well. This book is worth every penny and then some.

A Benchmark Biography

As a historian of American religion and Adventism I am pleased with this new biography of William Miller. Rowe is the first person I am aware of to meticulously go through all of Miller's extant papers--in places as diverse as Aurora University, Colgate Seminary in Rochester, and the papers discovered in the William Miller home now owned by Adventist Heritage Ministry. Rowe, who is not an adherent of any of the Adventist traditions, has done Miller and the story of Adventism a great service by demythologizing apologetics and hagiography and presenting Miller within his historical, cultural, and religious milieu. Some Seventh-day Adventists may be surprised as they read this biography to learn that Miller never became a Sabbatarian, yet I think an adherent of any Adventist tradition will find this a sympathetic yet compelling biography of the founder of a major religious movement. What is surprising is that no historian has written a biography sooner. The good news is that this biography was worth the wait!

The first scholarly biography of a seminal figure in American religious history

Incredibly, this 2008 publication is the first scholarly biography of William Miller, the Deist-turned-Baptist farmer who touched off one of the major religious movements of the Second Great Awakening. David L. Rowe's book, therefore, fills a significant gap in the literature on this period of American history, and on American religion in general. It's good, then, that it also happens to be a work of quality, one that sympathetically portrays its subject without whitewashing his flaws, and one that at the end leaves the reader with the sense of having encountered a fully-rounded human being--of having "gotten to know" Miller. Though it builds on the work of earlier scholars, including Mark Noll, Whitney Cross, and George Knight, the work impresses particularly in its extensive primary research, with much of the narrative propelled by quotations from Miller's own letters and from contemporary sources both sympathetic to and critical of Miller.

At 235 pages, the text is relatively slim. One wonders if a bit more heft in the volume would have allowed Rowe to draw out further some of his interesting insights into Miller's development. As a student of the intellectual history of this period--and as a teacher constantly looking for new approaches to share with my students--I found particularly interesting Rowe's discussion of Miller's thought as representing the transition from the objective, orderly, and systematic worldview of the Enlightenment to the personalism and affective emphases of romanticism. For instance, Rowe quotes two different descriptions by Miller, written three years apart, of his own conversion; the first emphasizes the Bible as rule and light, while the second finds in Jesus a comfort and a friend. Unfortunately, this discussion is fairly brief. Granted that the book is a biography and not an intellectual history, I would still have relished a more thorough reflection on this aspect of Miller's development.

Rowe's treatment of the Great Disappointment of Oct. 22, 1844, at first struck me as too restrained. I had expected, I suppose, that this event would take up more space in a book like this than it actually does. In reality, though, Rowe gives us a very good (if rather brief) picture of the Disappointment itself while also exploring the conflicts within Miller himself and within his movement in the aftermath. The picture of Miller that emerges here--a man whose diffidence and uncertainty helped to create much of the confusion and many of the divisions among his followers--is very compelling. Disciples like Joshua Himes, though sometimes frustrated by these qualities in Miller, remained faithful to the cause, and Rowe's portrayal of this relationship in particular is quite moving.

God's Strange Work is highly recommended for students of American religion and American history. Psychologists and philosophers of religious experience will also find it useful. Definitely worth reading more than once!

As a former Seventh-day Adventist, when I decided recently to explore the faith tradition that has had a profound impact on who I am, my first criterion was that I read a work that was not written by an SDA. Not that I despise Adventist writings, but I needed to have my heritage explained by someone who didn't feel compelled to defend the faith.

Enter David Rowe, whose book bores beneath the origin story of Millerism and reveals a man: a war veteran, father, husband, son, brother, constable, farmer, and anti-abolitionist. Thanks to Rowe, Miller becomes a human being whose search for hope in a broken world brought him to the forefront of one of the least understood movements of 19th century American evangelicalism, yet nonetheless profound in the impact it left when it famously fell apart after the Great Disappointment of 1844. I think every person who reads this book will find something in William Miller that will resonate with them as well, regardless of faith tradition. You may not agree with Miller or appreciate the Seventh-day Adventist Church, but you don't have to in order to be floored by the narrative presented in this book.

The Hard Way by Tanya Allan - A lovely book - please read it.

OK,so I cried a lot when I read this. Maybe with joy, maybe wih sadness but with such a sense of reality. I really am glad to have found Tanya Allan's work. If you don't mind a bit of tearful joy and hope, then buy this book. It is lovely. How things actually can work out for people with gender conflict, given a lot of love and hope.

A Modern Fantasy

The story was saved for me in part by the medical passages. I found here a talented author with a good plot, good imagery, and some well-drawn characters. Research has been done on more than one area and there were sub-plots to hold the tale together.
What was wrong? There was conflict, but not sufficient for me. I didn’t feel there was enough angst in certain characters and Kayla was far too readily accepted by one or two characters who I believe should have reacted quite differently - at least initially.
Perhaps as a fellow writer, I expect more difficultly in clearing the hurdles thrown at the central character. In essence, for my taste it was all too ‘nice’ and the speed with which the situation moved along was far too rapid.
In summary I believe that for me, it was too gentle and too many things slipped into place far too easily, but I’ve no doubt it will appeal to a wide audience.
If you’d like to read a pleasant tale where the characters are the loveliest in England - even the nasty ones, then this is for you.

A quick, fun read!

This was the first of Tanya Allan's books that I read, and still one of my favorites. It still holds up well after several re-readings.

The plot line is relatively straight-forward, without the criminal/financial intrigue or science-fiction elements that she uses in many of her books. This lets the author focus on some of the agonies of a transexual revealing herself to her family and friends, and develop the relationships with her best girl friend and new boy friend as well as her family.

Like several of her books, foreign language skill is an important plot element, which I enjoy. There are no explicit erotic scenes which occur in some of her books, but there is a very believable romance.

There are several humorous elements while the plot addresses the medical and legal aspects of transition.

The plot flows smoothly and stays engaging. The book is well written with very few editing glitches.

I definitely recommend it.
