great collection

Exactly what I want from an art book....page after page of art. Would have gave this a 5, but the pages are flimsy. The softcover falls apart on a lot of them. What are the differences between the 1st and second editions? I heard the first edition has art that was not included in the 2nd edition. Anyone know specifics?

amazing!
By reading guy
It is interesting that this book is out of print because it documents when Vargas was at the peak of his powers; he was the last of what I would consider the true pin-up artists. Of course the case can be made that others existed after him, but I consider the true pin-up to be a descendent of pulp and burlesque - tasteful, humorous, not offensive but stirring the imagination, having a major cultural impact, with wide instant recognition and extraordinary technique. And by that definition, Vargas really was the end of the line of the true-pin-up artist. A great book due for a reprint!

Vampire in Love, by Enrique Vila-Matas

“Arguably Spain’s most significant contemporary literary figure” (Joanna Kavenna, The New Yorker)

Gathered for the first time in English, and spanning his entire career, Vampire in Love offers a selection of the Spanish master Enrique Vila-Matas’s finest short stories. An effeminate, hunchbacked barber on the verge of death falls in love with a choirboy. A fledgling writer on barbiturates visits Marguerite Duras’s Paris apartment and watches his dinner companion slip into the abyss. An unsuspecting man receives a mysterious phone call from a lonely ophthalmologist, visits his abandoned villa, and is privy to a secret. The stories in Vampire in Love, selected and brilliantly translated by the renowned translator Margaret Jull Costa, are all told with Vila-Matas’s signature erudition and wit and his provocative questioning of the interrelation of art and life.

“One of Spain’s most distinguished novelists.” (Rachel Nolan - The New York Times)

“With his ironic worldview and playful sense of fatality, Vila-Matas’s reputation as a writer of intellectually stimulating but accessible novels looks set to grow among English-language readers.” (The Wall Street Journal)

Practical Statistics Simply Explained (Dover Books on Mathematics), by Russell Langley

In the many fields beginning to use mathematics widely (business, biology, the social and political science, for example) a knowledge of statistics has become almost as imperative as the ability to read and write. This useful volume promises to be the salvation of those who, despite a distaste for math, need to use statistics in their work. Approaching the topic through logic and common sense rather than via complex mathematics, the author introduces the principle and applications of statistics, and teaches his reader to extract truth and draw valid conclusions from numerical data.
An indispensable first chapter warns the reader on the ways he can be misled by numbers, and the ways in which numbers are used to misrepresent the truth (arithmetical errors, false percentages, fictitious precision, incomplete data, faulty comparisons, improper sampling, failure to allow for the effect of chance and misleading presentation). There follows a wealth of information on probability, sampling, averages and scatter, the design of investigations, significance tests — all presented in terms of specific, carefully worked out cases that make them both interesting and immediately understandable to the layman. The book is so entertaining, so eminently practical, that you'll gain expertise in the laws of chance, probability formulae, sampling methods, calculating the arithmetic mean and standard deviation, finding the geometric and the logarithmic mean, constructing an effective experiment or investigation using statistics, and a wide range of tests determining significance (zM test, X2 text, runs test for randomness and a number of others) and scores of other important skills — in a form so palatable you'll hardly realize how much you are learning, Scores of tables illustrate the text, and a complete table of squares and square roots is provided for your convenience. A handy guide to significance tests helps you to choose the test valid and appropriate for your data with speed and ease.
Written with humor, clarity, and eminent good sense by a scientist of international reputation, this book is for anyone who wants to dispel the mystery of the numbers that pervade modern life, from news articles to literary criticism. For the biologist, sociologist, experimental psychologist or anyone whose profession requires the handling of a large mass of data, it will be of incalculable value.

Lives up to its title
By Amazon Customer
This book is really written to be useful practically, and in that sense it is very successful. It is also written very concisely, so it is likely that it will clear many doubts. However, there are almost no theoretical explanations at all. In this sense, it is not a book that contributes to the theoretical understanding of statistics; so don't expect to know more about theory of statistics using this book; instead get ``Principles of Statistics" by M.G.Bulmer. This is a book to keep on the desk to help do practical statistical calculations and make inferences.

Arrived as described condition. Not as much fun to read as other types of books but useful.

Just what the title says
By M. Henri De Feraudy
The other reviewers have pretty much said it all.
This book is very easy to read, very enjoyable even, but I find it a little verbose (not that this is necessarily a disadvantage).
It should be used as an introduction, to give you a strong intuition for the subject. So many books treat the notion of null hypothesis
too succinctly. This one does not and gives the subject the attention it deserves.
It's accessible to anyone with just high school mathematics.
Although the basic notions of probability are explained, this is in an informal manner.
As another reviewer said, this book does not deal with the rigorous foundations of Statistics, but should that not be left for a second course?

The Serial Universe, by J. W. Dunne

In this book I have tried to give the reader a bird's-eye view of the territory covered by the theory called 'Serialism'. Some of the chapters, greatly condensed, have been delivered in lecture form to the Royal College of Science (Mathematical Society and Physical Society). But the main outline of the subject is, I believe, clear enough to be appreciated by those who have no special technical knowledge. Where all is fog, a blind man with a stick is not entirely at a disadvantage. In my case, Fortune presented me with a stick; and I have used this with considerable temerity. Certainly, it has led me somewhere possibly only into the roadway, where I shall be run over by a motor-bus full of scientific critics. But, if I have crossed safely to the other side, then I should like to express my gratitude to Mr J. A. Lauwerys of the University of London, whose continuous encouragement has been the chief factor which has kept me tapping along.

Game Engine Architecture, Second Edition, by Jason Gregory

Hailed as a "must-have textbook" (CHOICE, January 2010), the first edition of Game Engine Architecture provided readers with a complete guide to the theory and practice of game engine software development. Updating the content to match today’s landscape of game engine architecture, this second edition continues to thoroughly cover the major components that make up a typical commercial game engine.

New to the Second Edition

  • Information on new topics, including the latest variant of the C++ programming language, C++11, and the architecture of the eighth generation of gaming consoles, the Xbox One and PlayStation 4
  • New chapter on audio technology covering the fundamentals of the physics, mathematics, and technology that go into creating an AAA game audio engine
  • Updated sections on multicore programming, pipelined CPU architecture and optimization, localization, pseudovectors and Grassman algebra, dual quaternions, SIMD vector math, memory alignment, and anti-aliasing
  • Insight into the making of Naughty Dog’s latest hit, The Last of Us

The book presents the theory underlying various subsystems that comprise a commercial game engine as well as the data structures, algorithms, and software interfaces that are typically used to implement them. It primarily focuses on the engine itself, including a host of low-level foundation systems, the rendering engine, the collision system, the physics simulation, character animation, and audio. An in-depth discussion on the "gameplay foundation layer" delves into the game’s object model, world editor, event system, and scripting system. The text also touches on some aspects of gameplay programming, including player mechanics, cameras, and AI.

An awareness-building tool and a jumping-off point for further learning, Game Engine Architecture, Second Edition gives readers a solid understanding of both the theory and common practices employed within each of the engineering disciplines covered. Jason Gregory's "Game Engine Architecture, Second Edition" is deserving of five stars! Highly recommended!
By [KNDY] Dennis A. Amith
Jason Gregory's "Game Engine Architecture, Second Edition" is one of the BEST book on those who want to program games!

It's important to note that this is not a beginner book, you will need to have experience with C++ before you delve into this book as it can be used as a course text for a two or three course college-level series in intermediate game programming. It's also an excellent book for those learning about self-programming of games, especially as this touches upon the architecture of the eighth generation of gaming consoles - the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

For those wondering what the second edition has vs. the first, Jason goes into the latest variant of the C++ programming language, C++ 11 and the architecture of the current next gen consoles.

He also fills some gaps in the content of the original book, a new chapter on audio technology and his wanting to cover the fundamentals of the physics, mathematics and technology of the creation of major AAA games.

Also, fixing errors from the first book.

Here is the break down of Jason Gregory's "Game Engine Architecture, Second Edition":

I. Foundations
1. Introduction - Structure of a typical game team, what is a game?, what is a game engine?, engine differences across genres, game engine survey, runtime engine architecture, tools and the asset pipeline

2. Tools of the Trade - Version Control, Microsoft Visual Studio, Profiling Tools, Memory Leak and Corruption Detection

3. Fundamentals of Software Engineering for Games - C++ Review and Best Practices, Data, Code and Memory, Catching and Handling Errors, Pipelines, Caches and Optimization

4. 3D Math for Games - Solving 3D Problems in 2D, Points and Vectors, Matrices, Quaternions, Comparison of Rotational Representations, Other Useful Mathematical Objects, Hardware-Accelerated SIMD Math, Random Number Generation

II. Low-Level Engine System
5. Engine Support Systems
6. Resourece and the File System
7. The Game Loop and Real-Time Simulation
8. Human Interface Devices (HID)
9. Tools for Debugging and Development

III. Graphics, Motion and Sound
10. Rendering Engine
11. Animation Systems
12. Collision and Rigid Body Dynamics
13. Audio

IV. Gameplay
14. Introduction to Gameplay Systems
15. Runtime Gameplay Foundation Systems

V. Conclusion
16. You Mean There is More - Engines that weren't covered, gameplay systems

Overall, I was thoroughly impressed with this book and there is so much coverage of game engine architecture, I was literally in awe of how much Jason Gregory put into this book.

Not only do I recommend it for professors searching for a book on game engine architecture for their curriculum but not only does "Game Engine Architecture, Second Edition" work as an academic book but also those wanting a self-programming book as it thoroughly goes into the nitty gritty of today's modern game engines.

It's simply one of the best books on the market right now. Yes, some may hesitate on its price but trust me, the wealth of information in this book is priceless.

Jason Gregory's "Game Engine Architecture, Second Edition" is deserving of five stars! Highly recommended!

A pleasant and informative stroll through all aspects of game engine development
By Timothy Lovett
I've wanted to get my hands on Jason Gregory's second edition of Game Engine Architecture since I saw it pop up on my coming soon to Amazon list. I was lucky to be given the opportunity to review the book because it was something I really wanted and would have purchased shortly thereafter had I not been given this opportunity. I'm a software engineer by day working in Ruby on Rails for web development but I do casual development with the Unreal Engine and I have experience working with Ogre3d and Bullet Physics for my own little sandbox (I think that the best way to really learn the stuff is to get neck deep in it despite the benefits of a 3rd party engine).

Comparing the books physically the second edition has a slightly nicer binding on it. Both are massive in size but the second edition definitely is a bit bigger. There were 860 pages in the 1st edition and 1014 in the 2nd counting the indexes.

Like the origin the book does a great job covering a massive amount of subjects from physics packages, graphic engines, and the like to even covering the deadzone of analog input controllers. It's all really a basic introduction to a series of complex subjects that warrant further reading to really gain a full grasp on. I have plenty of books alone related to rendering (Real Time Rendering is a nice gem) and even 3d mathematics with vectors. You just can't pick it all up in one book and anyone thinking this is going to cover things at that level hasn't grasped the size of the material involved. The book is over 1000 pages and it's just scratching the surface, game development is a lifetime chore/pleasure. Jason does have some example code in the book covering different functionality but it never overwhelms the subject like some other game engine books I've read (Game Coding Complete felt like it was primarily code but they both have their purposes).

It was nice to see the new audio chapter Jason mentioned would be coming with the "There's more" section of the first edition. Would be nice if the book could cover more AI and networking related topics but I understand that at 1000 pages there's really no room left for a more in depth look. There are actually books out there specifically for both topics I'd recommend.

Needless to say the book is great. I was able to quickly leaf through and check for some changes to some of the existing chapters I had read (although a lot is reused from the first edition as one would imagine) and I felt like the new content is definitely worth it.

I don't know what else to say -- I highly recommend it and was giddy when it arrived. It's worth having if you plan on getting into any moderate game development. Even if you're just using an engine with its own domain specific language that abstracts the coding it's good to know how things work under the hood. This book is my new favorite -- now to somehow convince my wife I'm not hoarding by keeping the old edition too (although the size of the book will make this hard). Love it.

Undeniably, the best introduction to an amazing subject
By Ivy Reisner
The book is comprehensive in its coverage, everything from game physics, graphics, and audio to how to set up code repositories like Visual Source Safe and Subversion. As a result, you will need additional resources to deep dive into many of these areas, but after reading this book, you will know exactly what your options are, and where to deep dive. It covers all the generation 7 and 8 hardware, including the PlayStation Eye, the PlayStation Camera, both versions of Kinect, and the WiiMote, and for that it does go into a great deal of detail. The balance seems to be that the book will skim over topics that would be well covered elsewhere or would show up in other types of software design, and go into greater detail on the areas where other resources are sparse, and it strikes a very good balance in doing so. It is arguably the best first book on the subject.

The tone is serious. You won't get the cartoon people of the "For Dummies" or "Head First" series. You won't get the hand-holding of the "in 24 Hours"/"in 21 Days" series. It is far closer to a graduate school level textbook. It isn't dry, however, and the tone isn't as pretentious as most grad school textbooks. It's clear. It's engaging. Even someone who does not have a background in computer science and software development should be able to follow it.

I would have preferred more code samples, but for a book that mostly provides a view from 10,000 feet, that would be asking a bit much. The ones provided are clear and concise. The language choice of C++ is a good one, first because it is largely used in game design (not exclusively, of course, but it is a popular choice) and second because so many other languages -- Perl, Java, Python, C#, and more, are based off of C++, so the code is familiar to people who work in those descendant languages.

The only caveat I have is the Kindle version. I could not download the sample, as it says the format used it incompatible with pretty much everything. If you plan to buy the ebook version, take down the sample first, and make certain you can read it on your device.

A Well Written Book about an Asian Tragedy
By James E. Egolf
Anthony Kubek's book is a well researched, well documented book clearly explaining why the Chinese Communists were able to get power in 1949. This book gives the reader excellent background to the diplomatic background in the Orient from c. 1920 through World War II and thereafter. Readers are also introduced to the geography of Eastern Asia including Siberia which helps understand the diplomatic history of this area. Another useful asset of HOW THE FAR EAST WAS LOST is that Kubek gives a surprisingly good account of the background to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

Kubek introduces readers to the diplomatic and economic situation regarding the Chinese, the Soviets, and the Japanese during the 1930s up to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Kubek explains that the Japanese were a bulwark against the Chinese Communist guerrillas and the Soviets. Japanese diplomats made repeated friendly overtures to the U.S. when FDR & co. complained about Japanese intrusions in China in the 1930s. The Japanese kept Soviet expansion under control while protecting their own interests in parts of China which the Japanese desparately needed for natural resources. This section of HOW THE FAR EAST WAS LOST is crucial to understanding the diplomatic problems in Eastern Asia. The Japanese population was approximately half of that of the U.S., and these people were living in an area approximately the size of California. Japanese natural recources were the equivalent of those of the state of Mississippi. Any threat to these vital recources in Mancuria and other Japanese controlled areas of China controlled by the Japanese was seen as a life-and-death struggle. Those who complained about harsh Japanese conveniently that Japanese actions were similiar to those of the Westerners who controlled China from the second half of the 19th. century until the 1920s. The only sin the Japanese committed in China, compared to those of the previous Western imperialists in China, was that the Japanese were the new player in the imperialist game in Eastern Asia.

Kubek then gives readers a brief but solid background to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Anyone who is bored with the tired cliches offered by apprehensively textbook writers too timid to deal with honest history would find Kubek's brief remarks re the attack on Pearl Harbor enlightening and of serious historical interest.

Kubek's assessment of complete destruction of the Japanese by FDR & co. is important. By totally eliminating the Japanese, FDR and his advisors made the emergence of Big Communism in Eastern Asia almost inevitable. Kubek cites "The Mac Arthur Memorandum," dated February of 1945, which was clear that the Japanese were ready to surrender in early 1945. Mac Arthur was rebuffed by FDR & co. which continued the war and brought the Soviets into the war against Japan in early August of 1945 which made the Chinese Communists so much stronger. The use of nuclear weapons against the Japanese was totally unnecessary, and their elimination left a weak Chinese Communist movement much stronger than would have been otherwise.

Another useful part of this book is Kubek's detailed examination of the secret agreements made at the Yalta Conference in February, 1945 which favored Soviet hegemony in Siberia and China at the expense of Chaing Kai-shek and the Chinese Nationalist with whom the Chinese Communists were contending for power. Chaing did not know that important Chinese bases and strategic facilities were given to the Soviets from which they armed and assisted the Chinese Communists. One should note that General Haley and others who wanted access to these secret agreements were denied such access which was unconstitutional.

Other attempts to get an honest view of what was happening in China and events leading to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor were thwarted when General Marshall, later made Sec. of State, was suddenly sent to China to negotiate between the Chinese Communists and Chinese Nationalists. One should note Kubek's assessment of these negotiations. When Gen. Marshall first went to Chinas in 1947, the Chinese Communists had a poorly equipped army of appriximately 300,000 troops. By the time Marshall was done, the Chinese Communists had an army of over 2,000,000 well equipped troops, and many had captured Japanese weapons which were supposed to surrendered to Chaing and his government.

Kubek does not avoid the harshness and corruption in Chaing's government, and Kubek does not idealize Chaing. Yet, as Kubek clearly indicates, Chaing Kai-Shek was ALWAYS loyal to the U.S. Chaing could have easily enlisted his support for the Japanese in an attempt to thwart the Chinese Communists and especially since U.S. policy makers were underminning him. Yet, Chaing never did this.

The last sections of the book are Retrospect and The Epilogue which are well worth reading. Kubek not only deals with failures in China, but these two sections of the book show insight, logical reasoning, and thoughtfulness.

This reviewer's only criticism of the book is Kubkek's thesis. This reviwer does not view that China was anyone to lose. The days of the Westerners in China were numbered. Had Chaing Kai-shek' forces won the civil war in China, the Westerners, including the U.S., were on their way out of China. Chaing had a book published in 1943 titled CHINA AND THE WEST in which was clear that the Chinese were going to end Western dominance. The Chinese Reds were clever enough to use this book to denounce Chaing even though they were planning to do the same thing.

In spite of this difference of opinion, Kubek's book is well worth reading. His research is meticulous, and his prose is clear and concise. The late Harry Elmer Barnes plugged this book with the remark that it was the best book on the rise of the Chinese Communists from a resolutely convervative point of view. Anyone who wants to examine solid history based on documents and sources and solid research should read this book. It is an excellent book.

A warning unheard

A warning unheard

Kubek, Anthony 1963 How The Far East Was Lost. American Policy and the Creation of Communist China, 1941-1949. Henry Regnery Publishing, Chicago Library of Congress Number 63-12892; ASIN B000OMMQ2O Page 378 "No hoax has been more complete and convincing than that which deluded the American people from coast to coast into the belief that the Chinese Communists were a mild edition of agrarian reformers." One notes with sorrow that a similar hoax even to the inclusion of some common authors, journalists and newspapers (including the New York Times, and Theodore White) would be perpetrated on the U.S. and the people of Cuba. This book should have been a warning, to us in Cuba in the 1950s and yet it went essentially unheard.

HOW THE FAR EAST WAS LOST AND THE CREATION OF COMMUNIST CHINA
By ALBERTO NAVARRO
THIS IS AN OUTSTANDING BOOK ,BECAUSE IT PROVIDED A DIFFERENT VIEW OF THE PACIFIC WAR.
SINCE THE EARLY TWENTIES JAPAN WAS A BULWARK AGAINST THE MARXIST DISEASE IN THE FAR EAST
THE JAPANESE LEADERS UNDERSTOOD MUCH BETTER THAN THE WEST THE BOLSHEVIK THREAT FROM THE
SOVIET UNION AND ITS INFILTRATION IN CHINA AND MONGOLIA ,AS A RESULT OF THAT ,THE JAPANESE OCCUPIED
MANCHURIA IN 1931 TO PREVENT IT TO FALL INTO THE RED ARMY.
THE ROOSEVELT ADMINISTRATION FROM THE VERY BEGINNING STARTED TO ANTAGONIZE JAPAN AND THAT FINALLY
LED TO WAR.
IN 1945 WHEN JAPAN SURRENDERED THE MAIN OBSTACLE TO STALIN WAS REMOVED IN THE FAR EAST
BUT IT WAS NOT ONLY JAPAN, ALSO NATIONALIST CHINA THE MAIN USA ALLY IN THE FAR EAST WAS ANTAGONIZED
BY A DELIBERATED CAMPAIGN OF LEFTWING ELEMENTS INSIDE THE ROOSEVELT AND TRUMAN ADMINISTRATION,
LIKE FOR EXAMPLE OWEN LATTIMORE OF THE INSTITUTE OF PACIFIC RELATIONS ,THAT ULTIMATELLY
CULMINATED WITH THE DOWNFALL OF THE KUOMITANT REGIME IN CHINA AND THE VICTORY OF THE REDS LED
BY MAO TSE TUNG, THE RESULT: A VICIOUS TYRANNY THAT LEFT THIRTY MILLIONS VICTIMS,THE DISASTROUS
GREAT LEAP FORWARD OF THE LATE FIFTIES THAT PRODUCED THE WORST FAMINE IN CHINESE HISTORY,THE MADNESS OF THE CULTURAL REVOLUTION(1966-1976),THE INVASION AND GENOCIDE OF THE TIBETAN PEOPLE,
THE KOREAN AND VIETNAM WARS, THE BLOODY CONFLICTS IN MALAYA , INDONESIA AND BURMA AND THE AGGRESION AGAINST INDIA.
ANOTHER BOOK ABOUT THE PACIFIC WAR THAT I LIKED IS THE EMPIRE OF THE RISING SUN BY JOHN TOLAND
