Ah, the gifts that arrive on the winds of change. Breathe them in! Inhale this delightful, Light-full book by Gregg Unterberger! The Quickening is a compelling read—light-hearted, down-to-earth, profound, FUNNY and rich with mesmerizing stories of transformation.

The author and I have both trampled (I like to joke around, too) the spiritual path of A Course in Miracles, which assures us we will undergo spiritual lessons which together make up the "journey without distance to a place we have never left." We arrive to conscious awareness of our True Identity within God, a consciousness we will eventually learn to hold no matter what seems to be happening. Our lessons are certain to come; when we take them, and how we respond is voluntary. "What we really want to do is learn to navigate through the rough patches faster and with less suffering," Gregg asserts, and of course he is right. That's precisely what The Quickening offers—on-ramps to the EZPass lane of life's journey—even through forks and detours—saving money, calories and time—by using a chainsaw. How do you like my mixed metaphor NOW?

A Course in Miracles states that miracles collapse time. Guide for Spiritual Quickening

I loved this book! It is full of inspiring stories of people who have taken themselves on, their egos, their pain, and, using the many modalities described in the book, have experienced a quickening, a leap of spiritual growth and development. I'm excited to dive in myself! And the book was fun to read as well. The author is very witty!

Gregg's provides insight into techniques that can help advance your spiritual journey. He keeps things light with his humor, speaks from his own personal experience, and provides compelling examples from people who have worked with him. There's not a lot you can do on your own, however; it seems like having an experienced guide is necessary to handle the intense emotions that can be brought to the surface. The binaural beats approach with CDs is something I am trying though, and is safe to do on your own.

Enriching

I thoroughly enjoyed this little book. It not only is clear and follows the Mass wonderfully, but it also enables my two children, ages 4 and 6, to become more engaged in Mass. I allow them to bring this book to Mass and follow along. It definitely is a plus for kids and parents too. I plan on ordering more to give to friends with small children. Keep in mind this is for very young children. (2-8)

An excellent resource for Children/Youth ages 3 - 6

We purchased this brief missal for my 3,4, and 5 year old children who had been struggling (or perhaps it was my wife and I 'struggling' at Mass. It has been EXCELLENT, in the fact that they follow along with the Mass from page to page, finding the book more interisting than poking and whispering to each other... it has actually become a source of positive reinforcement, as the frequently point to the pictures, whispering "is this where we are?" I should note that none of these children yet read, but the pictures still, for the most part, holds their attention. My 3 year old daughter sticks with it about 50% of the time, but that is about 1/2 more than anything before. In these first three months, the Mass has been very "active" for my wife and I as well help our children follow along, but I have already seen them begin to do it on their own (turning the page when the next "activity" in Mass takes place), so I hope that we will all soon be following the Mass more or less independently. But what is important, I feel, is that they are INTERESTED in following along, and are recognizing there is an order to the Mass, and each part has meaning.

It really helps that their gestures pictured (nice illustrations) are what the priest is actually doing up at the altar, which further assists following along. All the 'lay participation' depicted are actually children (giving the readings, for instance) so it does not actually reflect fully what takes place in our Church, but I have not found this to be an issue -- my children recognize that someone is supposed to be reading at that point.

I did not purchase this book from Amazon (I obtained several copies from The Catholic Company), so I am assuming the cost given here is for ten copies.

One note: This resource will be somewhat obsolete beginning with Advent 2011, as the updated (recaptured?) verbiage of the Mass is to be in place. This is not of major concern, as it is not the words at this point that are of issue to my children. I would expect (and hope) that a newer version of this Children's Missal will be out by then. Nonetheless, if you are considering this, I would not wait... as each Mass is of 'inestimable value', the greater participation your child is able to engage it the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is well worth the few dollars this cost.

If your child is of the ages 7 - 13, I would recommend The New Saint Joseph Children's Missal: An Easly Way of Participating at Mass for Boys and Girls

I am a second grade CCD teacher and purchased these books to use in class. They are well written and very informative. The children easily follow along and are quickly learning the Catholic Mass.

Did not like this book at all.

I am currently a student at one of the universities that one of the authors works at. Because of that reason alone, we had to use this book for our class in Molecular Biology. For the entire semester, I struggled very much with working my way through this text. I normally average about 12-15 pages read an hour when taking notes, but with this book I was down to 5 pages/hour. It is very dense. It also has a bad habit of asking a lot of questions in the text and not answering them. Additionally, many sections are overly wordy and confusing (I know, it is molecular biology, it is supposed to be confusing, but this was too much). I seriously thought it was just me and maybe Molecular Bio was not my thing. Turns out it was the whole class. Many sold their books quickly after the semester started and bought other ones to use, and honestly, I wish I would have as well. In the authors defense, our university had a very poor genetics program instructor, so our background knowledge going into the course was probably not as substantial as most. However, it was not the material of the class that I was having a problem with (I got an A by the way), it was trying to dig it out of this text that was killing me.

What I am trying to get across here is that unless you have a pretty substantial understanding of genetics and molecular biology, this text is going to be very hard to use for supplemental information. If you have options, maybe ask a friendly geneticist or molecular biologist for a more student friendly edition that is easier to work with. Finally, just remember, it was not just me, but pretty much our whole class, many of whom were grad students from other universities around the country, and to a person, we all hated this book.

Poorly constructed

I've read this book in my graduate molecular genetics course. It is very hard to follow and hard to understand for a first timer in molecular genetics. I had to look at chapters from other books just to understand what this book actually wanted to say. Unnecessarily complicated.

Let's be honest- this book was awful.

This book sucks about as much as the class. I went into the semester with a 3.7, and graduated with a 3.2. It's HARD to do that senior year- you have to REALLY strive to drag your GPA into the gutter when you're 85% done with all your classes! This book was as clear as mud. It's not just poor diagrams. It's the only book where I would read the words in it, and think, "wow, there is absolutely nothing that is applicable to what I have to learn." There's no cohesive "textbook layout" that allows you to skim pages and grab a basic flow of information. There's extraneous information on completely random side topics that are filling the paragraphs that have titles that are entirely misleading! I can handle "too much information" books, but this book never explains the molecular levels of "why" things are happening on a molecular level and it didn't tie concepts together in methodical/ cohesive way. If this review is how you would want a textbook example to read when studying what a "review" is.... then this book is for you. (Minus the sardonic commentary.) If frivolous details- as I have provided- are what helps you to learn the basic understanding of a topic-that aren't fundamentally related....then you're SO in luck! Hope your professor's has good power point slides!

Here's to the Crazy Entrepreneurs

In this latest of his books about various aspects of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Dr. Harper offers up some entertaining and important ideas about the non-typical mental DNA of entrepreneurs. He blends his attention grabbing, tongue-in-cheek humor about "crazy entrepreneurs" with some sharp insights into the profile of those who defy conventional dogma while pursuing their vision of a disruptive product or new services offering. As for the case Dr. Harper makes about "entrepreneurism as a mental disorder"...I resemble those remarks! As do so many of the people I've admired and learned from throughout my long business career. If you want to be an entrepreneur, or want to understand why you or a loved one are chronically afflicted with the pursuit of "just one more startup", then this book is for you!

About the Author

An Important Book for Every Photographer

While the authors don't mention it specifically until the Epilogue, this books takes a Buddhist or mindful approach to photography. It's more about how one sees than the mechanics of taking a photograph. In fact, the book is refreshingly free of technical aspect of digital photography only delving into this in two short chapters. There are plenty of other books you can get to teach you how to select a camera or how to use the Zone System and the like. This book is how to see what to photograph.

If you think that photography is flaming sunsets or cute puppy dogs or that you need to travel to remote locations to 'get the shot' either this book isn't for you or you desperately need it. If you examine the work of the great classic photographers such as Edward Weston, Stieglitz, Cartier-Bresson and many others, you'll note that their subjects are often mundane and similar to those subjects which you yourself have easily available to you.

So why do they have a place in photographic history where most of us don't? The answer is that they can see the color or texture or shape or non-shape (space) in a frame which yields a photograph that's artwork. This book discusses how to condition yourself to see what others overlook and then offers concrete exercises so you can achieve that mindful vision of the world. Once you can see it, photographing it is trivial. That's the point of the book. You need to develop the eye of the master. Once you have that, recording what your eye has found is simple.

The books starts off a bit roughly with the authors trying to define different ways of seeing. They may as well have just said you need to look at what you are seeing rather than going on several pages trying to define what the book is about. Thankfully, once you are into the book's topical matter and exercises, you will understand what they are driving at even if you aren't able to put it into a dictionary definition.

That the book is liberally illustrated with photographs showing what the authors are talking about at the time nicely reinforces the text with examples assisting the reader toward understanding. In the end, this book will make the world a more interesting place for you by teaching you to see what you've so often overlooked. Even if you never take a single mindful photograph, just being able to see the world contemplatively will offer you a much richer way to experience wherever you happen to be existing now.

Take a look again at the works of the masters such as those listed in this review. Then consider that subjects similar to their masterpieces are all around you if only you can find them. Well, you can find them and this book will be a good guide to assist you in learning how to finally see the world which has always been around you. Once you find this world, photographing it is the easy part.

I've been taking classes in contemplative photography for over a year now (google "Miksang"). This practice has helped me notice the things around me that I've never looked at before. My photographs are more interesting and I see pictures everywhere - even when I don't have my camera with me.

This beautifully written book is lushly illustrated with excellent photographs and will help you to produce fresher, more perceptive images. This is the first step down a path that will open your eyes to the world around you. So while its a book about photography, its really about seeing and visual perception.

Highly recommended for all photographers and artists. In fact, highly recommended for anyone who wants to really see the world unfiltered.

Full of Surprises

This book on contemplative photography might just start a revolution! The fundamental premise here is that in your ordinary experience a fresh and direct visual perception takes place which is free from preconceived ideas, concepts or filters. It's called `fresh perception.' There is beauty anywhere and everywhere, even in the most ordinary of situations, like at the kitchen sink. It is joyful to perceive in such a direct manner and this experience can be shared through `forming the equivalent,' i.e. taking a foto of what you see within that moment of fresh perception. It's revolutionary because we leave behind the complexities of overly technical photography and the complexities of manipulating what we see to convey a message. Here, the primary lens is one's own eyes and the sensor is our heart.

The Practice of Contemplative Photography is full of excellently printed fotos which exemplify the assignments that are used to approach the visual world of color, texture, simplicity, simple form, light and space. You might be inspired to jump right into these assignments and experience first-hand what the authors are talking about. These exercises are explained with a relaxed and friendly tone and I found that they contain just the right amount of explanation and detail.

There are also some sections which are technical or philosophical descriptions of the process of seeing. While I found some of this material challenging, it is certainly not more difficult than trying to understand how a digital camera's sensor works or the interrelationships between shutter speed, aperture and ISO! The authors also provide a description of basic photographic principles such as focal length, aperture and depth of field, and point out the technical basics that one needs in order to link that fresh perception with the click of the shutter.

The Practice of Contemplative Photography is full of surprises and I would recommend it to professional photographers or anyone interested in simply enjoying one's experience with the camera. See the world with fresh eyes!

About the Author
Sir Winston Churchill was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953 “for his mastery of historical and biographical description as well as for brilliant oratory in defending exalted human values.” Over a 64-year span, Churchill published over 40 books, many multi-volume definitive accounts of historical events to which he was a witness and participant. All are beautifully written and as accessible and relevant today as when first published. During his fifty-year political career, Churchill served twice as Prime Minister in addition to other prominent positions―including President of the Board of Trade, First Lord of the Admiralty, Chancellor of the Exchequer, and Home Secretary. In the 1930s, Churchill was one of the first to recognize the danger of the rising Nazi power in Germany and to campaign for rearmament in Britain. His leadership and inspired broadcasts and speeches during World War II helped strengthen British resistance to Adolf Hitler―and played an important part in the Allies’ eventual triumph. One of the most inspiring wartime leaders of modern history, Churchill was also an orator, a historian, a journalist, and an artist. All of these aspects of Churchill are fully represented in this collection of his works.

History in the hands of a fine writer, still very readable

Because of his immense output, Winston Churchill may be described as an old-fashioned writer. Fortunately for us he does not read as such. There is very little archaic about the expressions he uses or the grammar he employs, in volume after volume after volume. It remains immensely readable, and this is the strength of a good writer, it seems to me. As a boy, Churchill was held up to me as an example of a person with a very full command of English. I was told, although I have never been able to verify it, that Churchill employed one of the largest vocabularies of any individual writing in English. It is ironic to think that, although the use of English is becoming ever more widespread, it is not generally being put to anything like the kind of use a man like Churchill made of it.
"The Grand Alliance" takes us to the point in the Second World War when the Americans finally declared their intentions. In a sense, it announced the end to hesitation, the end to British doubts about whether they could possibly win out against Hitler alone. Of course, America had participated in the war to a very large extent already, having agreed to set up the famous "Lend-Lease" program, whereby first Britain, and later Russia, were given material support in a way which satisfied the neutral and isolationist U.S. congress. It was also something of a victory for Churchill at the same time, since he had worked doggedly at bringing the Americans around, and although Pearl harbour did tip the balance, it was partly due to Churchill having prepared the ground.
Churchill himself states that, from the moment of the U.S. entry into the conflict, no matter how long it might take, he was certain of victory. From his point of view at the top, he could see that the sheer weight of numbers (tonnage, armament production etc.,), added to the geographical reality of Germany, meant they could never hope to win against the combined industrial might of Britain and the U.S. It was this absolute faith which sustained him during the reverses of 1941 and 1942.

Outstanding literature but poorly produced for Kindle

Why does not Kindle pay someone to check Kindle's automatic optical reader transcription? An experienced editor could scan the text and quickly ferret out the MANY typos, like "arc" for "are" and so forth --- obvious optical reader error. Even a spell check would help. A work this important deserves more care in transcription.

The Industrial Giant Enters the War!

The Grand Alliance represents Book three in Winston's epic documentary of World War II. It was first published by Cassell & Co. on January 1, 1950.
Winston goes into great detail of Great Britain's struggle with Germany in Northern Africa, the Nordic Countries and in Northern Africa along with the Battle of the Atlantic. He describes Britain and the U.S.A. effort to assist a struggling Soviet Government who was trying to repel the forces of a Teutonic invasion.
Mr. Churchill's description of the seeds of the Atlantic Charter aboard H.M.S. Prince of Wales is reason enough to read this book.
Winston describes the mounting strength of Great Britain's war effort in 1941. And along comes Pearl Harbor. This indeed represents the 9/11 of the Mid 20th Century to the U.S.A. I hate to say this but I do think Winston upon hearing this news secretly rejoiced in having a new Ally.
Upon having this news Mr. Churchill wasted no time and went directly to Washington to convince F.D.R. that Germany and not Japan should be the initial objective for defeat in this World Conflict.
Of course as usual, this book was well researched. It shows Winston in the light of the great World Patrician. It is of course a great read. Five Stars!!!

Fantastic Textbook to read in or out of school

This book was required reading for me but I enjoyed reading almost every single chapter. As a healthcare worker, it truly challenged the way I think and placed ethical issues in a perspective that allowed me to think for myself about all of them. There is a slight focus on the PPACA which I guess should be expected since that is one of the lastest issues our country is challenged with. The text covered many issues that we have been faced with throughout the last two to three decades in healthcare and I liked the fact that it discussed newer and more interesting issues first to keep you engaged.

I appreciated that it is kind of like an anthology in that most every chapter is a different author making each chapter feeling fresh. If you work in healthcare and serve patients, whether you are going to school or not, I recommend this book. It is certainly enlightening, educating, and challenging!

Chapter 1 was tough getting through but once you understand the theories, the remaining chapters get easier to understand. I have not read the entire book yet due to the start of the semester at school. I hope that the examples given throughout the text continues to drive the point home.
