This short story is about a very Top Secret sniper mission pulled off in 1966 Vietnam by Marine sniper Carlos Hathcock. You probably have read about that mission. The top brass said Hathcock was the only one who might pull it off though there was a good chance that he might not return from it. Supposedly taking out this one important man might change the course of the war. Before he accepted this mission Hathcock was not told in which country it was, or who the target would be. Only after he accepted did he learn some details. It required him to crawl through a large open meadow guarded by enemy patrols for three days, two nights and part of the next morning before he would be in range to take out the important target.

You may had been told about this mission with Hathcock before but this time in this short story you the reader get to actually experience the agony and the deprivations that Carlos experienced. And you will learn things you may not have read elsewhere about this incredibly difficult and extremely long mission. For instance, without a light to read his compass at night how did Carlos know where he had to go? How much food did he consume? In those almost 4 days of crawling how did he manage his bathroom? How did he sleep for two nights with enemy patrols around him? How did he handle his encounter with a poisonous viper?

How could he stand the army of ants that took up lodging in his clothes? But most important of all is how Hathcock fought to control the pain and stress and open blisters he suffered on his shoulder, hip and arm from such a prolonged abrasive slow motion crawl? And how could he have made that one shot, one kill that had to be dead-center in the small target that was not just the length of one football field away but it was the length of seven football fields away! How could he possibly make a shot like that? And finally after being cramped up, eaten up, and bruised up…how did he then so quickly avoid capture?

Mission Impossible? Not for Carlos Hathcock!

The author and I share a deep respect for Carlos Hathcock. As a Marine Sniper during the Vietnam war he was the "Go To" man for the most incredible missions involving the use of a sniper rifle. His stories are legends in the Marine Corp and in the Riflemans' World as well.

He was unusual in that he carried out most of his missions alone..until the Corp made having a "spotter" with the sniper to verify the and record the kill shot. Their is still doubts about how this rule came in to play. Some believe that competitive snipers (Army) simply did not believe Hathcock's growing number of kills. The addition of a "spotter" also served as a safety measure while the sniper was focused on the target, the spotter would be able to maintain awareness of the surroundings.

Hathcock was terribly injured while hitching a ride on a n armored vehicle when it ran over a mine and caught fire. He received burns over most of his body while attempting to rescue other occupants of the vehicle. He underwent many months of treatment and long periods of therapy and was not fully recovered when he entered the 1000 yard marksmanship challenge. His scar tissue broke open from the sling while he was in the prone position but he just kept competing ignoring the pain. His clothing was soaked with blood when he finished his round.

He was known as "White Feather" his trademark which made him a wanted man with a bounty on his head by the NVA and VC.

The epilogue told by a Marine who wanted some advice on how to zero his scope was very interesting. A lengthy, time consuming process but once it was completed he would have a rifle that was accurate at any given yardage, under a number of weather conditions assuming the triggerman was calm and collected. One wonders where Carlos learned the method? Trial and error or from an expert?

Carlos Hathcock retired as a Chief Warrant Officer after 23 years in the Marine Corp. Many books have been written about him and about Snipers in general. Hathcock ,in my opinion,changed the thinking from "Sniping is an act of murder" to "Sniping is necessary to counter enemy sniper attacks, instill fear and disorganization in enemy groups, and eliminate key leadership in enemy ranks. "

He proved this principle in his mission to kill the NVA general.

What an amazing man, you can train a shooter

What an amazing man, you can train a shooter, but Carlos had the dedication and bravery to complete operation which everyone else said was suicide and yet he would volunteer for those missions. Any soldier who goes into sniper training no matter what branch of the service, learns technics taught my GySgt Carlos Hathcock.. To this day, snipers are still trying to match imposable shots he was able to complete. This is the true story of an American hero..

Great Trad Bow Reference, Great Bios, Great Stories

First my disclaimer...I don't know Mr. Bertalan. I state this so you know that I am totally impartial.

This is a great book for anyone interested in Archery, especially Traditional Archery. Even the armchair adventurer will find some wonderful gems in this very well written book. (I read a lot, and know good writing). It contains not only what you would expect from the title, but so much more. Over 500 pages of 20th (21st) century Archery history are featured in the 31 chapters featuring 30 prominent bowyers. A chapter may start with a bowhunting story or painting a portrait of the picturesque settings where a bowyer performs his magic, or any number of ways that pull a reader into a good yarn without the obvious formulaic monotony. Each chapter is as if you bumped into a friend and he said..." I met this guy named Fred Bear (et al) whose been making archery bows over in Grayling. Let me tell you a bit about him.

Do you know what prompted Ken Beck to buy Black Widow from the renowned Wilson Bros.,after several other entreprenuerial endeavors foundered? It's a sad story but I'm glad I know it. I feel far more connected to him as a member of the macrocosmic community of hunting first, and the microcosmic (but growing) community of Tradition Bowhunters and target archers.

Tim Meigs whose wife Fern was on the cover of Trad Bowhunter Magazine when she passed, has a wonderful hunting story called "The Skinny Dip Buck". Tim arrows a nice buck drinking at the pond, the deer falls into the pond and starts swimming, he runs down the hill to get a kill shot and slips on a cow pie. He gets his kill shot and the deer starts sinking. He has to strip down and wade out to recover his buck. His friends show up and wonder why he's standing naked next to his well earned prize. This was a story I have retold so many times, that it was worth the price of the book. Love Tim's bows too. I met him after reading this chapter when Business took me to Carson City. When I asked my customer where Kit Kat Rd. was, her jaw dropped as Tim's is the only business on this short street that is not a brothel. Another great story.

Fifteen years (as of 2004) after the publication it could use some updating and include some of the new bowyers but it's still worth every penny. I reach for it when I see a used bow of interest or I want to just relax with a re reading of a chapter or two.

Great book on history of Archary in America

Bought this book being avid supporter of Traditional Archery. I read this book 13 years ago (checked out from a library. When I started looking for the book again it took me 2 weeks to find it. Wasn't sure of the name of the book until I came across a couple pages I had copied for reference. Recommend it to anyone wanting to know a little bit of history on Archery from hunting methods to bow making methods.

After two divorces and more than two decades as a psychoanalyst, Falk is an expert on the concept of being a woman alone—a term she prefers because "as a distinct category within women's culture, it formally elevates our presence and status, helps us to achieve visibility and expression, and allows us to redress our marginalized state." Hyperbole aside, there's no denying that to embrace being a woman alone isn't easy in a society where "bachelors are always eligible," while " 'spinsters,' almost by definition, are ready for the dumpster." But as Falk makes clear in this useful and appealing manual, it's inaccurate, unfair and unhealthy to equate being alone with being unwanted or a failure. Some may cringe at her flowery language, but she offers plenty of evidence for her central thesis that "aloneness is an opportunity, a state brimming with potentiality, with resources for renewed life." Drawing from her own experiences, those of her patients, and examples from such writers as Marion Milner and cultural figures like Kitty Carlisle Hart, Falk offers plenty of material to help even women with partners to understand the distinction between being abandoned and choosing to be alone, and to appreciate the healing and nurturing benefits of solitude. This book was not a typical "self help" type of book that tells you what you are doing wrong and gives you a five step solution. But rather, it was insightful and existential. I found it to be spiritually enlightening without being religious in tone. A very solid read for anyone looking to find authenticity in their life choices.

I highly recomend this book because of the conciseness of the text (it's to the point), the relevancy of the information, and above all, because of the wealth of musical examples to be used in the development of conducting skills. The conciseness of the text encourages students to read it, and at the same time, provides students with all the information needed for the development of the specific skill being discussed. The abundance of musical examples makes this textbook a valuable single-volume reference material to be used by any beginning conducting class.

Well, I thoroughly enjoyed this book as well as the first book in the series. What I didn't enjoy though was the numberous errors that should have been caught by proofreaders. Still it was a good read and I plan on reading the third book.

This book is wonderful. The story sucks you in and keeps you engaged the entire book. Kath is a great heroine, honest and funny. The romance is sweet. Great read! I can't wait for the next one!

W.E. Fairbairn taught unarmed combat to the famed British Commandos and the U.S. armed forces during World War II. Before the war he served as assistant commissioner of the Shanghai Police Force. A very strong textbook for Asian surveys

I found this book in 1997 after desperately searching for something to replace Shirokauer's creaky _Modern China and Japan_. I have used it for several Modern East Asia courses and am presently using it for a Traditional East Asia survey, and I find that students of all levels of knowledge appreciate it. It does have a few shortcomings, as I feel would be the case for any textbook on Asia, as the topic is so expansive and many situations are downright confusing. However, it gives a good balance of political to social history, has extremely useful maps and insets, and the writing is consistently good. I would also recommend it for the casual reader who wants to get a decent background on Asian culture.

This book needs improvement in some areas

There are a few weaknesses and factual errors in this book.
1. Index is very weak. Many important concepts are not listed in the index.
2. Too much emphasis on ancient/imperial China but not enough coverage of modern and contemporary East Asia.
3. Organization is puzzling. For instance, such an important historical period as the Northern Expedition is put under the chapter "China and Japan: the Road to War." This is an important period that deserves to have its own chapter.
4. Opinions(?)as facts. On page 349, the following description is given: "Zhang Xueliang and his troops kidnapped Chiang Kai-shek where he was spending a few days at a hot spring resort (with a lady not his wife!) and demanded...." The author has provided no documentation for Chiang's alleged liaison with another woman. Moreover, no other reference to this affair seems to be available in all relevant literature about the Xian Incident and Chiang Kai-shek . Chiang is a controversial figure but this allegation just cannot be supported.
Also stated in the book is the following statement: "The [Chinese] communists were tying down about a million Japanese troops..." during WWII. Considering the total number of Japanese troops in China during that period, this is tantamount to suggesting that the communist guerrillas pretty much single-handedly handled all the Japanese troops whereas the Nationalist troops did nothing. This is factually wrong and cannot be supported by historical facts.
These are just a few examples of the problems associated with this book. Here is hope that future editions will correct some of the aforementioned problems. The author did make an effort to weave all countries and historical periods together, which was challenging. He succeeded in some areas, but failed in some other.

An excellent primer on Asia by a humanist scholar and writer

Rhoads Murphey's East Asia: A New History covers everything a lay person needs and wants to know about this complex region and culture. This book is a fascinating and easy-to-read summary of Dr. Murphey's 60-year-long living and teaching experience in China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam and other Asian countries. It is an excellent introduction to Asia not just as a textbook but a very useful primer for corporate executives, professionals and even tourists. I've read this book and its various editions ever since 1973 when I first studied with Professor Murphey as a graduate student. Readers will get from this book not just the facts, images, philosophy and poetry of East Asia. You will see the humanity of a great teacher, scholar, writer and romantic who knows how to make Americans understand and appreciate our fellow men and women of this important part of the world. The book never fails to make me smile and re-discover the many simple truths about cultures that we so easily forget.
