About the Author
Douglas Van Dorn (M.Div. Denver Seminary) is the author of Waters of Creation: A Biblical Theology of Baptism, Galatians: A Supernatural Justification, Giants: Sons of the Gods, and Covenant Theology: A Reformed Baptist Primer. He has pastored the Reformed Baptist Church of Northern Colorado since 2002. He co-hosted the radio show Journey's End in 2011-12. He is a member of the Association of Reformed Baptist Churches of America and has served on its Administrative Council. He has been married to his extraordinary and beautiful wife Janelle since 1994. They have been blessed with four amazing girls and One gracious and loving God. He has climbed all 54 of Colorado's 14,000 ft. mountains and also Mt. Rainier in Washington and Mt. Shasta in California.

Not your average Galatians commentary...

In yet another work, Douglas Van Dorn has challenged readers to consider the biblical text in ways far different than typical scholarship. While the ideas raised in this commentary would have been readily recognized in the early church, the anti-supernatural bent of 21st century culture has led many to reject and forget the teachings of the first days of Christianity that help make sense of this great letter to the churches in Galatia. Van Dorn maintains a very conservative theological position in concert with his reformed, confessional commitments while simultaneously revealing the fascinating supernatural constructs of Paul's writing. The Apostle Paul asserts that the Galatians have been bewitched - by whom? How? In what ways? Does Satan use the law of God in a distorted manner to enslave the people of God? Who are the Sons of God, and how does Christ relate to "an angel of God"?

This is a highly recommended work on Galatians at a level that any Christian can understand. Supported by thorough, sound scholarship, any serious student of Scripture would benefit from Van Dorn's excellent work.

Clear perspective!

Very good book! Could do with a little less Greek work, but I guess this is how authors feel they need to justify some positions. Overall, the clarity of his exposition is good. Be prepared, however, for many editing mistakes, i.e. misspellings, double phrases, headings of pages. I enjoy Van Dorn as an author.

About the Author
Richard "Dick" James is a Crader Professor of Counseling at the University of Memphis. He is a licensed psychologist and licensed professional counselor. He also is a Nationally Certified School Counselor. He is currently coordinator of psychological assessment at the University of Memphis Center for Rehabilitation and teaches graduate classes in crisis intervention, theories of counseling, and school counseling at the University of Memphis. He trains police officers for crisis intervention with the mentally ill and consults on crisis intervention planning and techniques with schools, agencies, prisons and businesses.

Burl Gilliland was a twice Distinguished Professor Emeritus who taught in the Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology, and Research at the University of Memphis. He was instrumental in founding the Ph.D. Program in Counseling Psychology in Memphis and served as the program director for more than a dozen years. He was recipient of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Human Rights Award for his work in race relations and human relations. He was a licensed psychologist, licensed professional counselor, and licensed school counselor. He was also a retired Captain in the U. S. Naval Reserve, having seen service in World War II and combat duty in the Korean War. He served in extensive consultative capacities with a variety of agencies, police departments, and medical and educational institutions, including service for 18 years as school psychologist for the Milan, Tennessee School District. He was active in both APA and ACA.

Basically the same as the sixth edition, other than they split the 3rd chapter into two, buy the sixth edition!

For the most part, this is just another new edition in which the publishers switched a few chapters around and changed some dates. If you must have this text, save some money and buy the sixth edition from a private seller. Also, don't waste your time reading the entire chapter, you can get the main concepts in the chapter summary.

I wouldn't recommend buying this for Kindle

First of all, I want to be clear that I think the book itself is awesome, and if you're lucky enough to have this as assigned reading for a class, I think it's a great textbook. I can't be 100% sure because I didn't investigate it beyond a page or two, but if you Google search this book, I think you can find it for free online in its entirety. But, if you have to have a copy (I'm one of those people) please think long and hard before you get the Kindle version of this book. I had surgery on my right wrist (and happen to be right handed) and it is painful for me to write notes. One of the reasons I made the switch to Kindle textbooks was because I could highlight my notes, and then go into the Kindle app on my laptop, copy and paste the notes onto a Word document, and print my notes without the pain (and a lot of time) of having to hand-write all my notes. However, this book is formatted so poorly that I think it almost takes more time to do this than it would to just hand write my notes. Copying and pasting should be simple. But the book is formatted into two columns per page, so when you paste, it doesn't format properly, and you have to spend a lot of extra time formatting the notes correctly.
So far I have purchased or rented 7 Kindle textbooks, and this one has been the worst one by far. If you have the extra money, either rent a hard copy or buy one because unless you plan to only read the book and not do any copying and pasting of your notes, it is quite a hassle.

I wish I could afford to buy this book because there is SOOO much information that I want to review. Instead, I rented it which works out for me financially. This book makes crisis intervention strategies easy to understand and provides real-life examples. Awesome!

Strong anecdotal history from a lifelong fan.

Not an exhaustive history, but rather a light, highly anecdotal history of the quakes. Knowing that Gary is a career columnist, it makes sense that the book reads like a series of essays, and that's not a bad thing. I think he succeeds in establishing the pervasive theme of underdogs from an underdog city who never say die. The book is a nice pickup for both longtime fans as well as new arrivals brought in by the opening of Avaya Stadium. I only wish it had been longer!

Good history of the quakes

Interesting read about the history of the Quakes, was a season ticket holder and attendee from first season through the final, and was interesting to read about the behind the scenes activities leading up to the first season, also was very surprised read about the Blackhawks, never knew that were as good and proficient as they were..... good read

I started following the Earthquakes a few years ago. I wasn't born in 1974. I wasn't even born in 1984, but reading Gary Singh's history of San Jose, the Earthquakes, and Bay Area soccer made me truly believe that I was helping carrying a legacy over forty years old. It is a quick read, but filled with so many details about every era of San Jose soccer that made me truly appreciate my opportunity to cheer for them every game in their, and truly their, stadium.

Great for kids who like math, art, and minecraft!

This is a really cool math coloring book. My eleven year old daughter struggles somewhat with math, and level three was perfect for her to start on. If your child likes working basic math facts, art, and minecraft, then this is the book for them! It has three levels in all, the first level being perfect for first to second grade, in my opinion, the second level for third grade and up, and the third level has two-digit addition and subtraction, as well as multiplication and division.

color requirements are obnoxious

I purchased this as a Christmas gift for my boyriend's son, so he hasn't used it yet, and I hope he likes it. He loves Minecraft but needs some more educational, but fun activities, so this book is a GREAT idea in theory. However, I could only give it 3 stars for two reasons. First, the equations are super small. For someone young enough to still be practicing simple addition and subtraction, it should be a little easier to read. But my biggest concern is the color list. Nothing at all is mentioned in the description about how custom the color list is, and there is not a specific brand of pencils or crayons listed in the product description, or in the book, but the required colors list is very VERY specific. I guess because this wasn't mentioned in the description, I assumed it was something a basic 24 or even 64-pack of crayons could handle, but I was definitely wrong. There are 25 required colors, and instead of generic colors like "sky blue, dark green, and yellow-orange" they all appear to be the names of Prismacolor pencils. If you're familiar with Prismacolors. A 24-pack of these pencils is over double the cost of this book and only contains FIVE of the colors required. You would either have to spend nearly a hundred dollars on a huge pack of these PROFESSIONAL GRADE pencils to match the colors, or find a store that sells the pencils individually and purchase the entire set for about $40.

I understand that a lot of artistic kids could easily improvise these colors, but if your child has any focus issues, learning disabilities, or behavioral disorders, that may be more than they should need to handle while practicing math. Many kids need these types of books to be simple and straightforward. I want him to spend time practicing math, not second-guessing his color choices.

The best solution I've come up with is that I'm going to purchase a large box of crayons and use photoshop and my local print shop to make customized crayon labels to match the color names required in the book. Even with this, 25 is a really odd number to pack into a crayon box and that is SO much work to have to do for a coloring book.

Nice variety of difficulties

Nice variety of difficulties. I would have paid for it. I like how simple downloading/printing is. I have another coloring-type book on Kindle and can't do a thing with it because it doesn't print out!

My 3 kids like it too. It's a little hard to read the type, but manageable. Also, it asks for very related colors, like 3 shades of blue, on the same page, so you'll want a set that has more than the simple 8-10 colors. I recommend erasable colored pencils.

Good Research -- Antidote to Romantic Illusions

Let me recommend this quite readable and appropriately titled book to anyone who desires to become acquainted with some real, documented, quantified, substantive research about the history of trans-Mississippi Indian captivities, while simultaneously getting a much-needed injection of hardcore historical reality to counter the plethora of romantic, sentimental, and "politically correct" nonsense that burdens the shelves of contemporary bookstores.

With hardly any exceptions (aside from the extraordinary case of Cynthia Ann Parker, and perhaps a handful of others), it appears that being captured by Indians (especially if you were a female who had either approached or attained the age of puberty, and you were not otherwise too old or ugly!) amounted to a truly grim ordeal -- literally "a fate worse than death". And, most captives, who were apparently abused day and night (beaten, raped, starved, and tortured) and treated like dirty slaves, were more than eager to return to "civilization" when they had an opportunity. It all makes you suspect that the all too common notions of being taken captive and learning to cherish the wild and free life among the "noble savages" are, for the most part, romantic illusions, and that characters (such as the Caucasian woman who lived with the Souix as an adopted member of the tribe in "Dances With Wolves" -- by the way, a movie I really enjoyed) bear little resemblance to the harsh reality.

Beyond all that, the research presented in this book by the Michnos brings to light the sheer scope and scale of the Indian captivity problem that once prevailed out West. Apparently, many hundreds, and even thousands, of settlers either directly experienced or lived in fear of such an eventuality.

This book contains a series of first hand narratives of Indian atrocities toward white settlers in this country. The book's primary purpose would be for research. It would take a lot of patience for anyone to wade through this document for any other purpose.

This book is a real gem.

I stumbled on it recently when I was at the Samuel French bookstore on Sunset Blvd. In the heart of Hell-A (oops, scratch that - L.A. has no heart!) Anyway, there are tons of screenwriting books in that store. Tons. But I happened to pick this one up and start reading the Introduction. Very insightful. So I bought it (should've bought it here, though - it's cheaper), and I ended up devouring it pretty damn quickly. The writing is terrific - very conversational, accessible, smart, and at times bust-a-gut funny. But most impressive, the author sheds light on the importance of "connection" in the storytelling process. It made me think back about how many times in writing classes CONFLICT CONFLICT CONFLICT had been shoved down my throat. Okay, okay, I got it already! But, she points out, it's only half the story (the yin to the yang, or ya know, vice-versa...) - as she goes on to wonderfully illustrate and illuminate. Also, the sample student scripts are great additions. I especially got a big laugh out of "The Making of 'Killer Kite.'" I may have to spring for the companion video just to see how that film turned out.
Yeah, yeah, the book has "short screenplays" in the title, but the points she makes are applicable to scripts of any length. You can bet that even this jaded L.A. feature film writer will be incorporating a lot of her insights in his own creative process.
I'm looking forward to any follow-ups from this author, because she's finally brought something new - and important -- to the endless discussions (and how-to books) on screenwriting.

Crafting Short Screenplays that Connect

What I liked most about this book was its conversational style. Very down-to-earth, but it maintains a sense of professionalism as well. Claudia really knows what she's talking about - not only book knowledge, but also life experience. Of course, that isn't all there is to like about this book. Her insights are well-thought-out and well-defined. It's good to see something in the genre that doesn't focus on Conflict as the sole driving force in the narrative form. And, finally, on a practical level, I believe the book is well-ordered and well put together. And the length of the chapters is inviting, rather than daunting. You can read a chapter easily in one sitting; because so much of the learning process is not *reading*, but *doing*, I feel that the brief chapters allow much more time to get to the 'doing' portion of learning, the really meaningful stuff. In short, I wish all text-books were this accessible and enjoyable.

What a Great Screenwriting Coach!

This wonderful little book is for you, the student of screenwriting. How do I know? I had the good fortune of being in Dr. Claudia Hunter Johnson's screenwriting class at Florida State University. We used the methods described in her book and they work! If you are disciplined enough to follow her process, you will amaze yourself. You will begin with Le Menu (your very own personal autobiography) and finish with a well-crafted script. Although you will not have her direct feedback, you will have the benefit of a script coach who has helped launch a thousand careers. Tom.
