I love her idea that "...underneath all the nothings we talk about - there is something much deeper needing to be said." It's so very true. We automatically answer fine or pretty good, or we expect others to answer the same. But what are we really thing? Feeling?

With chapters titled Wrinkly Crinkly, Ugly Shoes, I'm A Shorty, and Me? A Whimp?, just to name a few, I found myself in her words over and over again. It was as though author Seedorf had written this book (her column) based on my life. I'm sure you'll find yourself on these wonderful pages too.

I have written my column Something About Nothing since 2006. My readers have asked for the columns in a book and this is the first volume. I realized it was needed when readers were looking up columns and cutting and pasting and running them off in book form to give to others when they needed a lift or inspiration.

In every nothing that we speak we leave something unsaid. We talk about things that don't matter and we miss the moments of friendship that do. This book is meant to be read over time to uplift and inspire. I hope it touches your heart.

Better Late Than Never

I won this book shortly after following Julie on her Facebook page. She asked if I could give her a review when I was done. That was many months ago, so I hope she didn't give up on me.
Part of the reason this took so long was because of how much I enjoyed it. "How could that be?" You may ask, "Why wouldn't you read it right up if you liked it?" Well, it was because I didn't want it to end. It was just so great.
This is a collection of Julie's articles she put together in one book. I didn't realize this at first. All I knew was the title, and I thought the cover looked pretty great. After reading the first few segments, I thought, "Gee, this sounds like it should be a blog, not a book."
Then I realized it basically was just that. I'd put it down and pick it up to treat myself to a few yummy tidbits of Julie's life. You see, she writes about herself; her thoughts, her experiences, her feelings. I felt like I was getting to know her slowly as the book unwound.
I loved her honesty and thought process. She is forthright in her writing, and admits she's not always perfect, including her writing. She accepts many things about others, and hopes that they do the same for her. She treats people with the respect and kindness she would like to be treated with. If she's anything like her articles, we could definitely be friends.
Many times I thought of my parents when I read her articles. I figured she must be around their generation. Yet I also related to her. She talked about things about her youth and past, but didn't make me, the reader feel lost being from a different time. She brought me right in with her. My dad has a knack for that as well, so I appreciated her story telling very much.
Overall I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read tidbits. They are funny, fun, whimsical, kind, thoughtful and provoking at times. Well worth the read.

About the Author
Carole M. Cusack is Associate Professor in Studies in Religion at the University of Sydney, Australia. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Studies in Religion and English Literature, a Master of Education (Educational Psychology), and a PhD, all from the University of Sydney. Her publications include Conversion Among the Germanic Peoples (Cassell, 1998), The Essence of Buddhism (Lansdowne, 2001), and Invented Religions: Imagination, Fiction and Faith (Ashgate, 2010), as well as a number of edited volumes and academic articles. With Dr Christopher Hartney (University of Sydney) she is editor of the Journal of Religious History, and with Professor Liselotte Frisk (Dalarna University, Sweden) she is editor of the International Journal for the Study of New Religions.

Of the several main contenders covering the diverse field, Tong's may be at once the most comprehensive and representative

Although I would agree that this text isn't a nail-biting page-turner, I have difficulty believing those reviewers who found the primary texts by the likes of Butler, Cixous, Irigaray so much livelier, more accessible and clear than Tong's explanations. Post-structuralist criticism, especially following upon the heels of French thinkers like Lacan and Derrida, became dense, esoteric, and difficult beyond the understanding of even many Ph.D.s with its specialist jargon and self-referential, seemingly private, inquiries/demonstrations into the limits and possibilities of human language. Feminist criticism--originally influenced heavily my male thinkers in the areas of structuralist, post-structuralist, post-modernist thought--was no different. In fact, its frequently recondite, difficult, and impenetrable prose led to many revolts by undergraduate women against feminist theory itself.

For this reason, Tong's book was especially valuable during feminism's heyday--an organized approach to the entire field as well as an accessible explication of the major, primarily female, feminist thinkers. Given the movement's declining influence as the 1990s came to an end, it was important that Tong came out with this new edition--not only to address developments since the 2nd edition--including the so-called "backlash"--but to serve as a reminder that even if feminist theory had lost much of its popularity and influence, it was still alive--and many of its most influential voices, if less heard from due to apathy and new priorities, were merely waiting to be rediscovered by later, intellectually curious students.

While there are always those who will deride "theory" (French theory, especially, has never been popular with American academics), thinking about what we normally do without thinking--in effect, thinking about thinking--is critical to the life of mind which, in a desperate world where only survival and political action count, becomes a "necessary luxury," a sure sign that all human actions and behavior aren't determined exclusively by the herd. Moreover, theory offers a useful paradigm, a structure, a conceptual framework for what would otherwise be an occasionally diverting but rather incoherent chorus of various, individual voices. The danger we face, especially since the downloading, piecing-out, and "atomizing" of texts by the many individual hyper-spatial "files" (fragments of what were once whole and complete works, albums, suites) is exactly the sort of disarray that theory seeks to organize and clarify--and to do so without "reducing" the original works and their authors to mere talking points and topic sentences in an overly broad, sweeping, homogenizing overview. Tong's strength is that she covers the field without misrepresenting its individual voices. The reader has every right to trust her and her carefully chosen words.

Textbook.

Purchased for a WMST class. Very, very dry. Hard to tell if the material or the way this was organized and written made it so dry, as a lot of feminist work is very interesting and dynamic. If used in a classroom setting, effective. If you're picking this up to learn about feminist theory for fun, I would reconsider.

Excellent intro to the many feminisms

This is the best source I've seen which defines the various feminisms (e.g. liberal, marxist, existentialist...) Tong describes the assumptions of each position and then presents supportive and opposing views. Her approach encourages the reader to consider the strengths and weaknesses of each position. Very balanced presentation with plenty of illustrative examples.

Very Helpful in Practice - Much Deeper than a Reference Guide

I have been developing Hadoop-based solutions for over two years, and I typically refer to two books - Tom White's book, "Hadoop: The Definitive Guide" which is a nice overview and a reference, and Alex Holmes' book, "Hadoop In Practice" which provides more context.

After reading this book, I can say that Professional Hadoop Solutions does a very nice job at applying depth to some areas that are not covered elsewhere - or are covered very lightly in other material. This book starts with three chapters on MapReduce programming, which I have found helpful and provides deep insight. The first chapter is more of an intro, but the next two go deeper - and this is very useful. Oozie is covered in-depth in three chapters, and not too many books cover it - Oozie is critical to understand when you are developing practical, large-scale processing systems with Hadoop & when you are orchestrating lots of MR jobs. I found the chapters on security to be practical and helpful - something that is often not covered in other books. I'm glad that Hadoop on AWS is covered, but I wish that real-time Hadoop was covered more - although this is certainly a new area.

In all, this book covers practical Hadoop development in depth, and it is done clearly. I will point out that this is not a book that is simply an introduction and a reference guide (If you need that, I would use Hadoop: the Definitive Guide, which is great for that purpose), but this book goes deep, and it is one that helps me deal with practical problems. It has already helped me and I highly recommend it.

Thoughtful style

I like this book for a thoughtful stile. It is not simply fragments of code, but it always tries (and manages) to explain why it is done this way. For me it is very important because I am not good in memorizing names and facts, but appreciate logic. It is very rare and great way to write books. I highly recommend this book (though not as an introduction).

Excellent but sloppy

This book covers a niche that few others have in that it treats Hadoop as a framework rather than an application. It dives in depth into various parts of it and explains how to solve problems you may not have even known about. It also has three chapters on Oozie, a topic which is all but ignored in other publications.

This book should have five stars and a glowing recommendation, but it is in dire need of editing. There are a ton of typos (even in source code), and some of the code samples are broken. One chapter describes how to build a dynamic Oozie workflow and the source they provided does not work and never could have since they are missing an XSD file reference entirely. When I added the reference it still did not work. This was very frustrating when I tried to implement this solution on a deadline.

Shanahan considers what the existence of superintelligent machines could mean for such matters as personhood, responsibility, rights, and identity. Some superhuman AI agents might be created to benefit humankind; some might go rogue. (Is Siri the template, or HAL?) The singularity presents both an existential threat to humanity and an existential opportunity for humanity to transcend its limitations. Shanahan makes it clear that we need to imagine both possibilities if we want to bring about the better outcome.

An exellent, brief introduction to the issues of the singularity and AI more generally

This is an excellent, brief book. Unlike many books in this field, it gets right to the point as well as filling the newbie in on vital aspects of applicable technologies. The book is somewhat philosophical but looks at the whole space of AI up to and including the singularity. It does not take a strong stance on what is possible technologically but explores what the implications are if it turns out to be the case that AI is possible.
