Practical, concise, and essential

Having lived and worked in Bangkok as an ex-pat for 6 years back in the 1990's, I seriously studied speaking and listening to the standard Thai dialect at The AUA Thai Language Center in classroom environments, used The Foreign Service Institute books and tape drills for self-study and practiced at the Bangkok YMCA Language School with experienced private teachers. You could say I was a serious student for period of about 4 years, and learned Thai grammar slowly through traditional aural/oral language acquisition approach. What I lacked at that time was a good grammar reference to help improve my usage and clarify nuances in meaning that frequently occur in Thai, but may not always be obvious to non-native, Western speakers.

Years later, I have come back to rebuilding my Thai language skills and have found David Smyth's work aptly titled "an "essential grammar". It's turned out to be the reference that I had always looked for: thoughtfully organized, the book stresses practical grammar used in spoken Thai, and captures cultural aspects of usage in the manner of native Thai speakers. Nice features include cultural notes on certain grammatical forms with regard to their appropriateness in social situations, gender specificity, idiomatic expressions, and other interesting features peculiar to Thai, such as the use of special adjectives that intensify meanings and make the foreign speaker sound more natural to native speakers. Other nice features of this reference include the author's coverage of " mood particles" that Thais often place at the end of phrases when seeking agreement with the listener (la', dooy, na' ni' nia). Yet another feature of the book was the all too short but important coverage of deferential grammar patterns that Thais use when speaking to monks and persons who may be of higher social status relative to the speaker. The chapter on Thai speech conventions, which cover grammatical patterns used for apologies, congratulations, politeness, paying compliments and socializing, are all important topics that are essential for any outsider wishing to navigate successfully through Thai culture or mix it up with native Thais. I have heard Thai native speakers use all of these grammatical patterns and features of the language appearing in Smyth's text, which convinced me of the author's command of the material and experience in choosing language most practical to non-native Thai speakers.

For me personally, one of the negatives of this text was the author's choice of Thai to romanization transliteration. There are many ways of romanizing Thai script. And while Smyth's choice of romanization may be appropriate for native speakers of British English, a native speaker of American English inexperienced in the reading or pronunciation of Thai might find himself mispronouncing words and phrases. For example the pronunciation of the word "enough" in Thai is better romanized as "paw", not "por" For me other romanization systems (e.g. AUA, IPA) do a better job in capturing Thai pronunciation, especially for native Canadian or American English speakers who's use of the rhotic "r" will get them in trouble when using Smyth's system or romanization. But this is a minor issue. It's best to learn how to read Thai script directly to learn proper pronunciation.

A second downfall of the book is also it's strength: It's a concise grammar. Serious students of Thai may wish to supplement this book with another grammar reference, such as "Thai Reference Grammar", which is more complete.

Accessible Thai Grammar

I have been tutoring Thai for the past nine years and this book has proven to be the most effective one that I use along with other vocabulary books. The book gives an insight to how foreigners approach Thai. I also like the fact that this books gives an accessible explanation to Thai grammatical concepts. In other words, it gives a concise explanation to how Thai language works as opposed to asking me to understand Thai like how a linguist would approach the language.

I was at once appalled and in love with this quirky family!

Anna, Portia and Emery are summoned back home when their mother, Louise, has a massive heart attack. During Louise's time in the hospital recovering, the three children reminisce about their childhood, their odd parents, Buzzy and Louise, their even odder extended family and where the road has taken them.

"It has only been recently that Anna forgave her mother for a litany of crimes Anna had been carrying in her stomach like a knotted squid."

As soon as I started reading Drinking Closer to Home, it felt so much like a memoir, I had to look at the copyright page just to make sure that it said "fiction" at the front. At the end of the book, the author interviews her own family, on whom the characters are based. What happens in between is pure magic.

Oh, how I cringed! Oh, how I laughed! Oh, how I felt compelled to turn the pages!

The very things that might make another family miserable are the very things that make this family work. The prolific swearing, the filthy house, and the unabashed drug use made me want to read the pages with my eyes half closed while learning about this crazy family. The humor, the brutal honesty, and the love made me want to want to be a part of it.

There were several scenes in the book that made me laugh out loud. There was one part in the book where we flashback to 1976 and the kids were visiting their grandparents Otto and Billie.

"Emory was hovering nearby, hiding himself from Otto, who had publicly called him Sissy Boy at least three times in the last hour. Emery thought that if only his grandfather could see the singing and dancing extravaganza of the Corny Kids Variety Show, he'd never call Emery a sissy again."

Emery was my favorite character in the book. He was embarrassed by his family, but didn't like being on the outside of things either. His struggle with his identity both in and out of his family moved me deeply.

All of the characters in this book were, in a word, colorful!

In Drinking Closer to Home, Jessica Anya Blau paints a vivid, painful, and funny portrait of three siblings and their parents. The family members are all damaged, in part due to their unconventional family life, yet they remain fiercely loyal to one another. The book is riveting - I stayed awake late into the night reading (not something I usually do) because I wanted to find out what the characters would do next. What is most amazing about the book, though, is not the recklessness of the characters' behavior or the outrageousness of the situations they find themselves in (nor is it the detailed imagery and accuracy with which Blau brings the scenes to life, though this is impressive, too); rather, it is Blau's ability to make these wild characters so compelling and so real; nothing in this novel feels inauthentic or exaggerated, but at the same time I could not have predicted or imagined any of it. This is a really great book by a really great author - I recommend it wholeheartedly!

strong quirky family drama

In Santa Barbara, fifty-something Louise suffers a massive heart attack. She remains in a hospital in critical condition with her prime complaint being the lack of a cigarette or two hundred. Her husband Buzzy the lawyer promised Louise he would conceal her condition from their three adult kids, but could not as he needs them near for his sake.

Anna flies in from Vermont; leaving behind a spouse she cheats on due to a sex addiction to run their florist business and their infant. Portia, separated from her cheating spouse Patrick, arrives alone since their daughter Esme lives with her father's lover. TV producer Emery and his boyfriend Alejandro also come from the East Coast; they hope to persuade his older sisters to donate their eggs so that they can raise a baby; they already have selected the chosen female bearer. The bickering horde invade Louise's room causing havoc to the hospital's rule keepers, which in turn elates Louise still a renegade hippie after all those years.

The insightful story line rotates focus from the present mostly at the hospital and the past in which each protagonist recalls incidents differently. Louise is the prime player who holds the strong quirky family drama together. Buzzy and the children have flaws that make each seen real and lead to fans empathizing with them; especially Portia who as the middle child became the mom when her older sister and their mother abdicated the role yet her daughter rejects her.

Did not have the 2012 update, so I would have been better off paying the extra $40 and buying directly from the publisher. Otherwise was fine.

"A Bride For Donnigan" was one of the better books by Janette Oke, and started out very interesting. But, there are some hills of good and bad. First off, I found everything too perfect and sugar coated. What are the odds of Donnigan and Kathleen getting along? Much less, falling in love? It might happen, but it would take time. Which leads me into how Oke didn't express how much time goes by, nor the age of Donnigan. We don't know much of anything about Donnigan. Towards the end, the total point of this book was gone. I was hoping for more about their marriage, and the trials and tribulations of it. I did enjoy the characters, nonetheless, and did care about their outcome, but Donnigan seems too good to be true. I'm also glad that a book was finally written about this subject, even if it was just a storybook romance. It still doesn't beat "Roses For Mama," but is good all the same. I recommend.

Thought-provoking, enjoyable, witty.....

This is my sixth Janette Oke book to read. This book, hands down,is the best Oke book thus far. Characterization is developed to the point that you can feel the nervousness both of the main characters (Donnigan and Kathleen) experience as they made the decision to sign up and follow through with the idea of the mail order bride. You can feel the anxiety Kathleen experienced with the haystack fire and also with the loss of Taryn. Donnigan's search for God's plan of salvation was thought-provoking as we take the presence of churches / Bibles / pastors as a way of life. Interspersed throughout the book were bits of humor and wit. "A Bride for Donnigan" is an all round great book.
