Nehemiah: An Example For Us Today

This is a terrific in depth study on the book of Nehemiah. Nehemiah, the cup bearer to the Persian king during the exile, goes to Jerusalem with a heavy burden on his heart to see the burned down walls rebuilt. He deals effectively with a variety of problems, obstacles, and enemies. The author breaks down the actions of Nehemiah in such a way that the person who reads this book can gain great insight and wisdom into a variety of situations in their own lives today. Nehemiah is dependent on God for the success of rebuilding the walls and remembers to give all the glory to Him. Nehemiah is effective and efficient, through God's help, at recognizing and dealing with his enemies, those who criticize the efforts of the builders and threaten to attack and undermine the progress. I highly recommend this book to anyone who finds themselves in need of a new start in life for whatever reason. Administration, leadership, and spiritual leadership are among Nehemiah's personal strengths and he is an example for us.

An excellent companion to any study of this fascinating Old Testament book

Raymond Brown's "The Message of Nehemiah" in InterVarsity Press' excellent The Bible Speaks Today series provides helpful background and excellent application of this (sadly) neglected but fascinating Old Testament book. Employing a winsome style, Brown's volume (256 pages) is an easy read by any educated layperson, yet he takes the entire text of the book seriously. A very helpful companion to any study of the man (Nehemiah) who was determined to rebuild not only the wall of Jerusalem after it was destroyed and many of the Jewish people taken into exile, but also the Israelite community. Yet, as Brown comments, after all his work and success, the story of Nehemiah's work ends in a way that is disappointing. As Brown notes, "The stark honesty of the Bible makes it such compelling and relevant reading." (p. 218) Recommended.

After post-doctoral positions at the Institute for Advanced Study, the University of Utah, and the University of Pennsylvania, Crauder came to Oklahoma State University, where he is now Professor of Mathematics and Associate Dean. Crauder’s research in algebraic geometry has resulted in 10 refereed articles in as many years in his specialty, three-dimensional birational geometry.

Attempts to cover too much information and leaves behind a lot of basics

This review comes from an experienced PHP programmer (10+ years) who knows OOP, and has worked with other PHP frameworks like Symfony. I bought it to see what the Zend Framework was all about. After reading this book (and realizing I hadn't learned much) I took two courses from Zend that really cleared things up. Yes, I know the courses are much more expensive than this book, and don't pretend a book to compete with that.

A good analogy to explain what this book does is: it gives you the cooked fish instead of teaching you how to fish.

For example, right on page 33 it shows you how to use modules which is definitely not needed for beginners or even required to do a successful ZF project. Here's a quote from Matthew O'Phinney (Zend Framework's main contributor as of 18/Sept/2010) "modules are really second-class citizens in ZF currently." ([...]).

It also jumps to forms use right in page 47 without covering very basic things like how to get a Bootstrap instance from a Controller Action (which is used in real life WAY more than modules or forms), or how to work with Application Resources in the Bootstrap. I'm not saying "don't go into forms at all", I'm just saying that covering it on page 47 is jumping the gun a little. Note that if you are -as the title states- a ZF "beginner", by the point where forms are presented you STILL don't have the tools to do anything on your own, other than the little things the book has shown you. And again, the book shows you how to do a couple things, but doesn't go into WHY you want to do that.

By page 100 it starts with the Model and instead of using ZF's own database components, the author decides to use the Doctrine ORM which is way waaaaay more complicated than using Zend_Db. Again, Doctrine is a wonderful package and I use it ofter because of its amazing features, but it is not for the faint of heart, and definitely not for a ZF beginner. Actually for the project this book proposes there is absolutely no need to use Doctrine; you could do all you need by using Zend_Db and its related classes. None of the features that you'd normaly use Doctrine for are used here. So again, this book jumps the gun once more.

The good thing about this book are the links at the end of each chapter. They point to VERY useful references that expand on what the chapter covered. There are also "ASK THE EXPERT" boxes with some useful info too.

I wouldn't recommend this book to a beginner rather than an intermediate ZF user who wants to see a different take on a ZF project (like for example how to use doctrine on your models).

Excellent coverage of a huge topic in a small amount of space

I had a lot of programming experience in C, Fortran, etc, but zero web programming experience when I bought this book along with a number of others on html, css, php, mysql, javascript, ajax, and another on Zend Framework. Out of them all, I found myself spending about 80% of my time with this book. I think the reason was that it acted as a roadmap for what I needed to learn about next to understand how to build a real-life non-trivial web 2.0 application. It doesn't go into a huge amount of detail on any one aspect. Instead it presents a series of real-life problems to solve in the context of implementing a very well-chosen sample application.

It explores one or two ways to solve each problem making best use of the Framework. It then settles on a particular way to do it in the sample, usually with very good explanations for why he chooses the solution he does, and provides lots of references to good, current online sources of information about other choices as well as more detail on the one chosen. A lot of other (thicker) books, as well as the Zend Framework Reference Manual, and much of the online information in forums, try to demonstrate how many different ways the author knows how to skin a cat, and go into detail on each one, without ever giving any guidance on how to choose among them. An alternative is overview books that are a lot thinner, but they don't give enough detail to actually build anything significant. This book strikes a happy middle ground with good overview material showing how the big pieces fit together, discussion of alternative solutions with references providing details on them all, and then real code implementing one or two of the choices. There are separate stand-alone code examples that help explain alternatives, but each chapter provides code that contributes to a single application that ties it all together, and that can be downloaded and run. There might have been one or two minor problems that I encountered getting it to run (on XP with XAMPP for Windows 1.7.3 and Zend Framework 1.10.7), but even though I had never seen php code before, it wasn't very hard to get it running.

The book is also very current, and it works to present current best practices. Another review mentioned that choosing to use Doctrine instead of Zend_Db seemed like a bad idea. But I would argue that there are plenty of good references and examples of code using Zend_Db. Doctrine really seems to be gaining traction, and using it within Zend Framework is something someone just starting to use the framework would be better off learning than Zend_Db. You go to a framework to get some leverage on complex problems, and Doctrine gives you so much more leverage than Zend_Db. That choice also serves as a demonstration for how extensible and flexible the framework is, which is important for a new user to understand.

Of the 17 books on various aspects of web programming that I can see from where I'm sitting, this is the only one with noticeable wear.

Newbie review of Zend Framework A Beginners Guide

This is the first review of any book that I've ever bought. I'm a part time Hons Degree student and I have to develop a web application based on an existing desktop application as my final project.

I have purchased many books over the course of my degree and before it, some are on par with this book some are so poor I've either gotten refunds or they are used to prop up my monitor. I felt that I had to write this review because without this book I would be sunk. I have one php and one Ruby module under my belt from college so I guess that the book is not really aimed at me, as it says in the book it is intended for those with a firm knowledge of PHP. However I have found that the content is so easily explained that I have had no real issues with developing the base of my app.

I would have liked to see more content given to Ajax such as searching with Ajax, a section explaining Zend_Session_Namespace and how to handle updates etc of models with composite primary keys, hence only the four stars. However to be fair this is more due to the fact that the documentation on the Zend Site is so poor and the majority of examples I found online are outdated and don't work with the latest version of the framework.
I have also found that the author to be very helpful and approachable. He answered the questions I had about the content of the book and provided some helpful links. This is a major first as I've contacted the authors from other books (mainly those propping up my monitor now) and am still waiting for a reply. Thank you Vikram.

About the Author
Thomas Keneally (b. 1935) is an Australian author of fiction, nonfiction, and plays, best known for his novel Schindler’s List. Inspired by the true story of Oskar Schindler’s courageous rescue of more than one thousand Jews during the Holocaust, the book was adapted into a film directed by Steven Spielberg, which won the 1993 Academy Award for Best Picture. Keneally was included on the Man Booker Prize shortlist three times—for his novels The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith, Gossip from the Forest, and Confederates—before winning the award for Schindler’s List in 1982. Keneally is active in Australian politics and is a founding member of the Australian Republican Movement, a group advocating for the nation to change its governance from a constitutional monarchy to a republic. In 1983 he was named an Officer of the Order of Australia for his achievements.

Reasonably well done, but certainly not up to 5 star standards. Historical accuracy OK, but author should have an expert check text for detail. Example = "Enfield Rifles Made at Harper's Ferry". Anyone knows Enfield Rifles were made in England & Imported (North & South). Had to laugh at one reviewer who had issues with sex content (not much). Same person had zero issues with graphic battle content ( gut shots etc )? Go figure.

Exciting story, a tribute to the common soldier of the Confederacy

There are some unfortunate errors in research and editing of this exciting story. For example, Keneally says that Stonewall Jackson was shot by a Confederate cavalryman. Instead, he was shot by a member of the 33rd North Carolina Infantry. I found several typos, such as one where the author was talking about a man named Hook, whose name switches to Hood, then back to Hook again. But these quibbles aside, this is a fascinating tribute to the common soldier of the Confederacy. Barefoot and starving, these men achieved miracles against the industrial might of the North. They fought for their homes, not political ideals.

Outstanding Read

I am sad that I've finished this book. I enjoyed every moment of it. I felt as though I was along for the ride with Stonewall and his men. It was mostly a rough, sad ride and knowing what I know about the the cause of the Civil War, I still do not understand why these men fought. Some men love war and the life of war, some needed money badly and were paid to be a soldier by someone who didn't want to fight, some were newly immigrated to the United States but very few fought for the right to keep slaves - very few even owned slaves. I very much enjoyed the side story of Usaph and his wife Ephie that ran throughout the book giving us a little break from the war going on always down the road. I knew the Civil War was fought on roads from South to North to East in yards of citizens like ourselves but until I read this novel I haven't thought about it in terms of "what if it was on my road in my yard".

About the Author

She is the author of numerous scholarly articles, the book LIFE WITH AIDS (Rutgers, 1991), and the book RAPUNZEL'S DAUGHTERS: WHAT WOMEN'S HAIR TELLS US ABOUT WOMEN'S LIVES (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2004). She is also co-author of LABOR PAINS: MODERN MIDWIVES AND HOME BIRTH (Yale University Press, 1988) and co-editor of THE POLITICS OF WOMEN'S BODIES: APPEARANCE, SEXUALITY, AND BEHAVIOR (published by Oxford University Press and now in its fourth edition). Professor Weitz has won two major teaching awards at Arizona State University, as well as the Pacific Sociological Associations' Distinguished Contributions to Teaching Award, and has been a finalist for other teaching awards numerous times.

Great book about medical sociology

I bought htis book for my medical sociology course. I really like it and I decided not to sell the book at the end of the semester. It's a medium sized book, not too heavy and big. I like the topics presented in this book and how they affect society's health as a whole. The book also make me think about things that I don't think are even a problem. For instance, the medicalization of childbirth or assisted reproduction.

Wow. I rented this book because it is required for the sociology class I'm taking this semester and I must say, there are many grammatical/spelling errors in this book! I wonder if she got this book peer reviewed? Was it read by an editor? Shocking! Otherwise, it's easy to understand, so that's a plus.

About the Author
Born in Muskegon, Michigan, John Frederick Nims received his M.A. from the University of Notre Dame and his Ph.D. in comparative literature from the University of Chicago. He has taught poetry and given workshops in poetry at Notre Dame, the University of Toronto, the University of Illinois at Urbana, Harvard University, Willialms College, the University of Florida, and the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has also been a Visiting Professor at the universities of Florence and Madrid and has been on the staff of many writers’ conferences, including the one at Bread Loaf, Vermont, where he taught for more than ten years. He is the author of eight books of poetry among them, The Iron Pastoral, Knowledge of the Evening (a National Book Award nominee), The Kiss: A Jambalaya, Zany in Denim, and The Six Cornered Snowflake―books that have brought him awards from The National Foundation of Arts and Humanities, The American Academy of Arts and Letters, and Brandeis University, which awarded him its Creative Arts Citation in Poetry. He has been the Phi Beta Kappa poet at the College of William and Mary and at Harvard University. He has also published several books of translations, including Sappho to Valery: Poems in Translation, The Poems of St. John of the Cross, and The Complete Poems of Michelangelo and edited The Harper Anthology of Poetry. Several times on the staff of Poetry (Chicago), he was its editor from 1978 to 1984. In 1982, he was awarded the Fellowship of the Academy of American Poets; in 1986, a Guggenheim Fellowship for Poetry; in 1991, the Aiken Taylor Award for Modern American Poetry.

David Mason was born and raised in Bellingham, Washington, and received degrees from The Colorado College and the University of Rochester. He spent most of his twenties traveling and working as a manual laborer, with a brief stint working for a film company. He has taught at Minnesota State University, Moorhead, and is now on the faculty of The Colorado College. He lives in the mountains outside Colorado Springs. Mason’s two prize-winning books of poems are The Buried Houses (1991) and The Country I Remember (1996). With Mark Jarman he co-edited Rebel Angels: 25 Poets of the New Formalism (1996; reprinted 1998) and with the late John Frederick Nims Western Wind: An Introduction to Poetry (2000). His collection of literary essays, The Poetry of Life and the Life of Poetry, appeared in 2000. Mason is also a memoirist, fiction writer and frequent book reviewer.

too few aspiring poets read this book

Almost all contemporary "workshop" style poetry commits the simplest and most fatal of mistakes, such as using vague imagery, dwelling in abstractions, or lapsing into sentimentality. These flaws and more are addressed in this lucidly written book, which contains sections on the concrete image, sentiment, and intelligence and their places in poetry. Its only drawback is that its anthology section is too brief. Prospective poets would do well to begin here, and to supplement their reading with Fussell's "Poetic Meter and Poetic Form," Harvey Gross's "Sound and Form in Modern Poetry," and Perkins's "History of Modern Poetry," among others.

WESTERN WIND IS ESSENTIAL FOR ASPIRING POETS

Western Wind by John Nims and David Mason is the only textbook I've ever felt passionate about. I cannot imagine a better foundation for an introduction to poetic verse. Western Wind is a well-written, thorough and astonishingly sophisticated book. It has a depth of consideration of the technical features of poetry that most anthologies lack. The authors demystify poetic structure and syntax by using a wide range of poets from diverse traditions and time periods.

Western Wind's explanations of the elements of poetry are thought provoking and relevant for aspiring poets and seasoned writers alike. It offers a practicing poet's perspective on selection, organization, titles, phrasing and commentary. Although the book covers the mechanics thoroughly, it never lets the reader forget that poetry is an art. This is a solid, intelligent book and I highly recommend it to all aspiring poets.

WESTERN WIND is an outstanding introduction to poetry. When I was an undergraduate, it was assigned as our main textbook for an introduction to poetry class. To top it all off, the last two hundred pages of the book are an anthology of great poetry. The resource is amazing simply for the anthology. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning how to write better, either poetry or something else. There is much to be learned from these pages.

This is the first book in the Kingdom series. The heroine is a strong character with a quixotic streak, who learns the difficulty of helping other people -- it's not as easy as it seems! The writing is elegant, the plot is interesting and unusual, the characterization is excellent and you quickly grow to care for her and her family. The Kingdom is well-imagined, and it's interesting to see how separate the lives of the nobles are from the common people. I have read this book three times over a 14 year period, and still enjoy it as much as ever.

Read this book!

If you are thinking about reading this book I urge you to stop thinking and start reading. I read it for the first time as a teenager and have read it again so many times since then. I get lost in the Kingdom each time I enter it and I find that I cannot stay away from the series for very long. I especially recommend it for girls who are looking for inspiration and are tired of the damsel-in-distress stories that are so often marketed toward girls and women. So, stop reading reviews and just read the book!

This is one of my favorite books in the whole world. I have read it at least a dozen times. A very thought provoking, dramatic almost-fairy tale that challenges how we view the world and the stories that shape it, through an admirable, strong and clever young woman's eyes. Highly recommend!
